How to drill a leaf spring in 37 seconds

StableLoadThe key to drilling a leaf spring effectively is to apply a significant amount of force, using a cordless drill with a very slow rotation speed and a well-lubricated drill bit. Using our special StableLoad Leaf Spring Drill Tool, cobalt drill bits and cordless drill, the specifically designed StableLoad Drill Tool cradles the drill allowing you to slowly guide the drill bit with little effort. No need to struggle with keeping the drill in place while applying a significant amount of force by hand -- the StableLoad Drill Tool does the work for you and is the simplest and quickest method to drill the spring. If you have decided you do not want to use the StableLoad Drill Tool, read below.

The StableLoad Drill tool is available to rent for FREE.  We require a $150 refundable deposit. Customer pays freight both ways. The StableLoad Quick Disconnect DRILLING REQUIRED kit (part number A7311) is available for installation with amazing results. This kit comes with four specially treated drill bits and specific instructions for drilling the required (four) 3/8" diameter holes through the ends of the lower overload. StableLoad Upper Overload Part # A7200/A7202 (No-drill) Overview

StableLoad is engineered for Ford, Dodge and GM trucks fitted with factory upper contact overloads (see application guide). Torklift's StableLoad for upper overload applications is designed to replace the smaller, inefficient factory overload bump stop pads, putting the upper overload springs to work sooner.  It dramatically stabilizes the vehicle suspension and makes the vehicle's passengers and load significantly safer.

The StableLoad upper overload is available for a very quick and simple no-drill installation with serious improvement results.

This is accomplished by bolting each of the StableLoads (four per kit) onto each overload frame bump stop pad (front and rear passenger side, front and rear driver side) StableLoad kits work equally well with or without aftermarket airbags overloads. StableLoads on Vehicles with Aftermarket Airbag Overloads

Your vehicle factory suspension was designed by the vehicle engineers to carry the payload on the leaf spring suspension. Overloads such as airbags can help a vehicle that is towing or carrying a heavy payload by keeping the vehicle level. Leveling improves braking by shifting more weight onto the front wheels due to a forward shift in the center of gravity and front alignment stays closer to factory specification as again the vehicle is closer to a stock level stance.

The downside to airbag overloads is they accomplish all this by lifting the weight off the factory-engineered spring suspension. Your vehicle engineers designed the weight to be carried over the progressive 4' rear leaf springs. On any heavy towing or hauling set up, to level the vehicle with airbags means you have to take a majority of the weight off the factory leaf spring suspension and are now carrying that weight on an area roughly equivalent to the size of a two footballs. This is why you can actually experience a considerable increase in unsafe handling such as sway, porpoising (bucking) and body roll even though the vehicle is now closer to level with the airbags engaged.

As stated above, the StableLoad dramatically improves vehicle handling characteristics by "pre-activating" the stabilizing affect designed into the rear springs by keeping the springs actively under load the way your vehicle factory engineers designed them to operate. The StableLoad accomplishes this and functions equally as well when used with or without airbag overloads. For vehicles that do not yet have airbag overloads, we recommend starting with the StableLoad prior to investing in airbags.

Footnotes:

(1)A7310 StableLoad is a no-drill application and requires factory pre-drilled .5" diameter holes in lower overload spring. The A7310 Quick Disconnect StableLoad is designed for vehicles that have a lower overload leaf suspension with a hole near each end of the lower overload spring. The lower overload will, for the most part be shorter, thicker and will generally have separation from the rest of the spring pack. In most cases, there is a plastic disk covering the hole in question. Click here for illustration.

(2)A7311 (WITH DRILL KIT) will fit any passenger or commercial vehicle, van, SUV, truck, RV etc., with rear leaf springs and a lower overload spring. The lower overload leaf can be identified by being on the very bottom of the spring pack. It's thicker than the rest of the leaf springs in the spring pack usually has a gap between the lower overload leaf spring and the upper leaf spring pack.
-Drilling four 7/16 holes required. Specially treated drill bits and detailed drilling instructions are included.
-Average drill time is 30-40 minutes for complete installation
-Many factory overload springs come pre-drilled with 1/2" holes. Drilling holes in the overload springs in the same factory locations found on vehicles with pre-drilled holes will have no affect on your spring's integrity or operation. The drilled springs (when drilled in accordance with the Torklift International drilling specifications) and the integrity of the springs once drilled are covered under the Legendary Lifetime Warranty.
-Some overload springs may have adhesive padding on top of the overload spring, Use a screwdriver or equivalent to remove the padding. This will ensure proper rotation and ease of use.

(3)The A7200/A7202 is a NO DRILL APPLICATION and must have a factory installed upper overload.
-Will not work in conjunction with SuperSprings.
-Due to factory overload engagement design, some applications have progressive engagement, where rear springs will contact first.
-Drilling of rubber pad on some older Dodge applications may be required. Depending on the vehicle model, suspension package and condition, actual distance between the StableLoad and vehicle frame overload contact bracket may vary. In some rare instances, when the vehicle is not carrying a load, the StableLoad may come into contact due to rough road conditions and other anomalies.
-(#A7201 Spacer kit) is available for vehicles that need additional spacing for the StableLoad to contact the overload spring.

(4) On Quick Disconnect StableLoad (part#'s A7310/A7311): Due to wear and tear after time, some vehicle leaf springs may have minimal clearance with the lower overload for StableLoad engagement / disengagement when the vehicle is unloaded. In order for the StableLoad to engage and disengage with minimal effort, a minimum gap of 1/8" is required between the lower overload and the spring pack.

(5) There is no fit for the 3500/E350 Cab and Chassis.

(6) If your Nissan Titan has an Axle wrap bracket located at the rear of the lower leaf spring A7310/A7311, StableLoads will only be installed on the front of the driver and passenger leaf springs.

(7) Due to clearance issues, the stableLoad will only work on the rear of the spring.

(8) Will not work with factory installed airbags. This is due to the lack of both upper and lower overload springs.
