Why the Factory Anchor Points in Your Truck Bed Are Not Engineered for a Truck Camper

The cargo tie-down rings installed by the manufacturer are designed for light, temporary loads. They are typically unrated for weight, and they attach to the truck bed floor, not the frame. The truck bed is composed of thin aluminum, steel, or composite material. It is not engineered to sustain the prolonged, dynamic forces that a loaded truck camper generates in motion.

A truck camper is not a static load. On every road surface, including pavement, gravel, washboard, off-camber, it applies constantly shifting forces in multiple directions simultaneously. Anchoring that load to the bed floor rather than the structural frame concentrates stress on components that were never designed for it. Over time, that stress manifests as progressive damage to the bed, the camper's anchor points, and the connection between them.

ApexAnchors solve this at the source. They bolt directly to the truck's structural frame (the strongest part of the vehicle) and bring those anchor points up through the bed floor to where they are needed. The load path is direct. The structure is correct. The engineering is complete.

anchors

In Bed Frame-Mounted Payload Anchor Features:

  • Frame-Mounted Load Path: The ApexAnchors bolt directly to the truck frame, not to the bed floor, bed rails, or any secondary structure. By routing the load directly into the frame, ApexAnchors distribute the forces of a loaded camper through the strongest structural members of the truck. This is the fundamental engineering principle that separates ApexAnchors from any bed-mounted anchoring solution.

  • 2,000 lbs Per Anchor Point: Each anchor point is independently rated for 2,000 lbs, a specification that reflects the real dynamic forces generated by a loaded truck camper in motion, not the theoretical static loads that light-duty cargo anchors are loosely designed around. When all four anchor points in the complete system are engaged with properly tensioned spring-loaded turnbuckles, the camper and truck function as a single, coupled vehicle.

  • Retractable Flush-Mount Design: When the camper is not loaded, the ApexAnchors points retract flush with the surface of the truck bed. The bed returns to a clean, uncluttered, back-to-stock appearance. No permanent protrusions. No hardware to remove. No compromises to the daily utility of the truck bed.

  • Preserved Ground Clearance: Because the anchor points are mounted internally and retract into the bed floor, the vehicle's original ground clearance is completely unchanged. For off-road use, including overlanding, forest service roads, backcountry access.

  • Eliminates Camper Shift: Camper shift is the unintentional lateral and longitudinal movement of a loaded camper during transit and is a direct consequence of insufficient anchoring. When a camper is anchored to unrated bed-mounted hardware with connections that can lose tension or stretch out, the camper moves. That movement damages the truck bed, damages the camper's structure, and compromises the handling and stability of the combined vehicle.

  • Tailor-Made Vehicle Fitment: The ApexAnchors are not a universal adapter. They are engineered to the specific frame geometry, mounting locations, and bed dimensions of the specific truck. Every bracket angle, bolt pattern, and access hole location is designed for this application. The result is a bolt-on installation with no fabrication, no shimming, and no improvisation required.

  • Compatible with Leading Truck Camper Brands: The ApexAnchors are designed for truck campers that route their tie down connections inside the truck bed, including Cirrus, Four Wheel Campers, Travel Lite, Scout, and other brands using inboard anchor configurations. Not sure if your camper qualifies? Call our technical team at 800-246-8132.

  • Simple, Bolt-On Installation: Installation requires drilling an access hole through the truck bed floor to reach the frame mounting location. No drilling into the frame. No welding. No permanent modification to the structural members of the truck. Complete installation instructions and a torque specification chart are included with every kit.

  • Aligned with Truck Manufacturer Guidance: Truck manufacturers generally recommend that significant loads be transferred to the truck frame rather than supported by the bed alone. ApexAnchors are engineered in direct alignment with that guidance.

  • Made in the USA: Designed, engineered, and manufactured at Torklift International's facility in Washington State.

  • Legendary Lifetime Warranty: Every set of ApexAnchors is backed by Torklift's Legendary Lifetime Warranty, a warranty that reflects the confidence we have in the engineering and materials that go into every product that leaves our facility.

Inboard Vs. Outboard Comparison

Is ApexAnchors the Right System for Your Setup?

ApexAnchors (inboard) are designed for truck campers whose tie down straps connect inside the truck bed. If your camper uses external anchor points that connect outside the bed, Torklift's Outboard Frame-Mounted Tie Downs are the correct solution.

Installation Overview — Chevrolet/GMC 2500/3500 Front ApexAnchors (C5211-P)

Required tools:

  • Safety glasses and gloves

  • Floor jack or support stand

  • Metric and SAE socket set and wrenches

  • Torque wrench

  • Drill with hole saw or step bit

  • Paint pen (for post-torque fastener marking)

  • Rust-inhibiting primer or touch-up paint (for cut bed edges)

Important: Always follow the vehicle-specific instruction sheet included with your kit. If any detail below conflicts with your printed instructions or the torque chart in the kit, the printed instructions govern.

  • Step 1: Prep the truck Park on level ground. Set the parking brake and chock the rear wheels. Review the full instruction sheet before starting and locate the frame mounting position beneath the bed.

  • Step 2: Locate the frame mounting points From underneath the truck, identify the frame mounting locations for the front ApexAnchors brackets.

  • Step 3: Drill bed access holes Using the supplied template or measurements from your instruction sheet, mark and drill the access holes through the truck bed floor at the correct locations. Deburr all cut edges and treat immediately with rust-inhibiting primer to prevent corrosion at the cut edge.

  • Step 4: Install the brackets From beneath the truck, position the driver-side bracket at the frame mounting location and align with the drilled access hole above. Install supplied bolts and hardware finger-tight per the orientation shown in the instruction sheet. Repeat on the passenger side.

  • Step 5: Square and align Confirm both brackets sit flush to the frame. Verify each anchor point aligns correctly through its access hole, retracts fully flush with the bed surface, and extends without binding. Adjust before torquing.

  • Step 6: Torque to specification Torque all fasteners to the values specified on the torque chart in your instruction sheet. Mark all fasteners with a paint pen after torquing.

Pre-load verification checklist:

  • All fasteners torqued to spec and paint-marked

  • No bracket contact with brake lines, wiring, or body panels

  • Anchor points retract fully flush and extend smoothly by hand

  • Bed access hole edges deburred and treated

  • Both anchor points level and at matching heights side-to-side (±1/8")

Choosing the Right Torklift Setup

  • Spring-Loaded Turnbuckles: Spring-loaded turnbuckles tensioned to 300 ft-lbs are required with ApexAnchors. The spring mechanism provides controlled flex that absorbs the dynamic forces of a loaded camper while maintaining constant, calibrated tension on every anchor point. Rigid connections cannot accommodate these forces and can overload the camper's anchor points over time. Torklift FastGun Apex turnbuckles include a built-in tension indicator and a quick-release handle for convenience.

  • Rear ApexAnchors: This page covers the front anchor points only. The complete four-point system requires a matching set of rear ApexAnchors. Rear F5006s vary by truck year, configuration, and 6.5'. Use the Fit Finder or call 800-246-8132 to confirm the correct rear anchor for your setup.

Maintenance and Inspection

Inspection intervals:

  • First check: 50–100 miles after initial installation and after the first loaded trip

  • Ongoing: before every trip or every 5,000 miles (whichever comes first)

  • Winter/salt environments: monthly

  • After significant off-road use: before and after each trip

Inspect at each interval:

  • Fastener torque: retorque to spec if any movement is detected

  • Bracket-to-frame contact: no gaps, no fretting marks or surface wear indicating movement

  • Anchor point operation: retracts flush, extends smoothly; no deformation, corrosion, or binding

  • Bed access hole edges: no rust, cracking, or enlargement of the opening

  • Turnbuckles: spring preload within spec; no cracked welds, bent hooks, or corrosion at connection points

  • Camper anchor points: no elongation, cracking, or deformation at the connection point on the camper

If wear or damage is found:

  • Light surface rust on bracket or hardware: clean and treat with rust-inhibiting paint

  • Rust or cracking at bed access hole edge: treat immediately with rust-inhibiting primer and sealant; do not defer

  • Damaged hardware: replace only with equivalent-grade hardware from the original kit

  • Sticky or binding anchor point: inspect for debris or deformation; clean and lubricate per the instruction sheet
