I have to mention that the Subaru dealership said I would never get an aftermarket towing package because the car design was so new. The salesman kept saying U-Haul still didn't have one. Well, they wanted me to pay about $1,000 for theirs, and the Ecohitch was about $350 out the door.
The video demonstration of installing the Ecohitch was very helpful. It filled in the blanks the written instructions leave. However, as a first-time novice installer, I have a few suggestions.
First, there are two types of clips used to secure the rear bumper cover - a common piston-type which is ubiquitous among most Japanese cars, and easy to remove. The other is similar, but more like a rivet, and they are EASY to break. I got one out OK, but the other is toast. Some instruction on removing them might help, though I suspect they are not an expensive part to replace.
My next suggestion is to do another demonstration installation in an Ascent WITH backup sensors. The model used in the current demo is the base model with no sensors, and there are no helpful guides or warning out there about disconnecting the sensor cable from the bumper cover. It was fairly easy to do, but if someone wasn't aware of that connection, they could damage the plug or the sensors.
My next suggestion is related to the last. The backup sensors involve two components which are attached to the "bumper" which must be removed to install the hitch assembly. No current mention of that in the demo or the written instructions. Further, once the hitch assembly is in place, there are no corresponding mounts for the two components, or holes to re-use the old plastic mounting clip (if you managed to remove it without breaking it). A simple fix would be for the Torklift engineers to drill a hold on either side of the top of the hitch assembly. For now, I am using some heavy duty velcro. We will see how it holds up.
Finally, once I had the job done and was admiring my work, I realized no one mentioned picking up the coupling for the brake and signal lights. Might make sense to sell that along with the hitch package, or at least remind the weekend warrior that it will need to be included, and installed. I'm hoping it can be installed without removing anything else.
Overall, I was able to install the hitch in about 2.5 hours, which is pretty close to the time I was quoted for professional installation. I'm not looking to ever do this again, but it can be done by someone with a decent set of socket wrenches and some small ramps to elevate the back wheels.
