Current trailer steps a problem? Upgrade today and save!

RV Steps 3At Torklift, our foremost priority is making life easier for RVers – especially when it comes to trailer steps! This especially includes those who have current factory or other aftermarket steps or stools that aren’t working. Just like the photo shown on the right, this drawbridge-style step that allows mud, water and other debris to get inside the RV. Also, due to the height of the RV, the steps aren’t able to reach the ground and provide a solid platform! You shouldn’t have to carry around extra wood, stools or ladders to stabilize your steps.

Make your RV experience even better

IMG 1807Instead of having to settle for steps that are less than extraordinary, why not upgrade to the GlowStep Revolution? Although there are many new kinds of steps for trailers on the market that are an alternate to current factory designs, they do have their disadvantages. One of the most common issues that we see with these new steps is that they are designed to install within the RV doorway and have to be manually lowered down from overhead. They require modification and drilling into your doorway which could potentially cause warping and damage after much use. That also means that you have to stand underneath these steps to lower them as well as have a certain amount of clearance next to your RV in order to deploy these steps. This could be very inconvenient in many circumstances such as storage facilities, stopping at gas stations and tight camping spots.

GlowStep RevolutionClearance is not an issue with the GlowStep Revolution

The GlowStep Revolution trailer steps on the other hand, are designed to store inside the existing factory compartment underneath your doorway. They require minimal effort and space to deploy once installed. No matter where you’re parked, you will be able to use your GlowStep Revolution steps. Similar to the staircase found in your home, the GlowStep Revolution entry step system also has the shortest riser height in the industry at only 7.5-inches.

Accessories and more!

What’s better than a ladder or step stool for truck camper steps?

20170907 163553 copyThere’s nothing worse than being on a camping trip, having a great time, and then all of a sudden have it ruined by a trip to the hospital from falling off your truck camper steps. Whether it’s the instability and shakiness of the steps at steep angles or the fact that you have to jump from great heights to get to the ground – you shouldn’t have to deal with these issues any longer.

So, what can you do? With many aftermarket step upgrades available, what’s the best truck camper step to choose for you? Some of these upgrades include ladders or step stools for your truck camper. While these are certainly options to consider, there are also a couple of alternatives available to aftermarket steps that are a safer and more stable option.

A typical scenario: truck camper step stool or ladder

fpoole TorkLiftStowNGo 102With a camper step stool, it’s designed to sit underneath your current factory truck camper steps to give you an extra step.  Step stools help make it a little easier to get in and out, but the truck camper steps are still shaky because they don’t reach the ground. The only step touching the ground is the folding step stool. Step stools also usually come with a no-slip surface and have a wider platform than factory steps. But, when you’re on the move – you have to figure out storage for these steps since they’re not attached to your camper in any way. Also, if weight isn’t applied evenly, it can be dangerous and add to the potential of tipping over.

Also available are RV step ladders. These are designed to be sturdier than just a step stool and factory step combination, and most ladders aren’t as steep as your factory steps. Quite a bit more expensive than step stools, the other downside of truck camper ladders is that they require a large amount of space for storage that might be hard to find with all the gear you bring along. The other potential issue is that these steps also won’t attach to your camper unless you do some major modification to your entry.

Solution #1: Torklift Original GlowStep

Dan Walinsky RVStepFail SubmissionThe GlowStep truck camper step is made of 100% aircraft grade aluminum and stainless steel with a unique SureGrip anti-slip tread. Torklift’s GlowStep uses a double hinge design featuring dual flat bars. This prevents any twisting or warping of the steps when under a heavy load. Self-illuminating strips glow up to 10 hours with only five minutes of light exposure. The illuminating strips are the same grade glow strips are used to indicate emergency exits on commercial aircrafts.

The steps are engineered with a special hinge design that allows the steps to deploy and retract with ease, and is built to maintain longevity and durability. The GlowSteps are extraordinarily sturdy by connecting the RV all the way to ground level. Like planting roots with the All Terrain Landing Gear adjustable feet, you have unparalleled stability when entering and exiting your truck camper so you don’t have to worry about the wobbly instability of factory steps.

The GlowStep is available in two to six step range with a 7.5-inch riser gap so it resembles residential staircase height so you’re not having to become a long jumper in track and field just to get in and out of your truck camper. Because you’ve spent your hard-earned money on this step investment, they are also lockable to prevent theft and store in position.

Features of the GlowStep Include:

Self-illuminating steps truck camper steps glow in the dark for 10 hours with only five minutes of light exposure - no batteries
Safely enter and exit your truck camper or RV after dark
SureGrip™ step tread provides no-slip surface (no grip tape)
Stores in position and lockable to prevent theft
100% aircraft grade aluminum and stainless steel
Stainless bolted hinges allow for easy step addition or removal
Exclusive: adjusts to basement model campers
Legendary Lifetime Warranty
Proudly made in the USA

Solution #2: Torklift Stow N’ Go

The Stow N’ Go step was manufactured after feedback from customers, especially for those who wanted an upgrade to avoid the tediousness of removing and storing their steps on the inside of their campers. The Stow N’ Go locks while in transit, eliminating the hassle of detaching the steps. The steps remain mounted to the back of the truck camper bumper or underneath the door to prevent the interior from getting dirty, so you don’t have to spend extra time cleaning the truck camper before you head out on the road or when you get home.

Stow N GoWith these truck camper steps, you no longer have to worry about your steps falling off your bumper because they weren’t stored properly with a bungee cord or other attempted storage modification. With a special nylon retainer system, it eliminates movement while in transit by snapping the steps securely in place. That means that you don’t have to worry about losing your steps while driving down the road because they’re securely stored to your truck camper with the Stow N’ Go bracket. For extra security during transit or protection against potential thieves, GlowStep Locks are available. The steps come in a range of three to six steps for any truck camper height.

This step system comes standard with the storage bracket, GlowStep step system and All Terrain Landing Gear adjustable feet. Or, if you already have the Original GlowSteps, you can purchase the bracket and All Terrain Landing Gear separately to convert your GlowStep into a Stow N’ Go.

Features of the Stow N’ Go Include

Everything you need to know about RV shore power cords!

Fortress PowerLock Blog 1Whether you’re new to RVing or a seasoned camper, you should know that RVs require power to run their various appliances and systems. Your rig is powered by either its 12-volt systems, also known as batteries, or by being plugged into a 120-volt power source through an RV power cord, also known as shore power. Shore power requires connecting your rig to an outside power source, either a power outlet or a generator.

Power connections at campgrounds are not all alike. They come with a variety of sizes and shapes of power cords. Different power cords mean different amps, and you have to use the appropriate power source for your rig. Your RV either requires a 30-amp or 50-amp plug to connect to a 120-volt power source at the campground.

Fortress PowerLock Blog 2There are items in your RV that won't work unless you are connected to an external power source providing 120-volts. This includes your household outlets, air conditioner, TV and microwave. Usually, these appliances cannot be powered from batteries unless your RV has an inverter to convert DC power into AC power. DC (direct current) power will only send the electric charge in one direction as compared to AC (alternating current) power which changes direction periodically. Getting power from a 120-volt source to your RV is a big deal because some appliances will only work with 120-volt sources. You need to have the right RV power cord for your rig and it needs to be high quality. This is one place you don't want to pinch pennies.
Example of a 30-amp plug

Fortress PowerLock Blog 3Because your RV manufacturer has provided a high-quality power cord, you don’t want there to be any chance of it getting stolen because of the copper that’s inside the cord. It could not only mean you have to replace your cord, but it could also cost you hundreds of dollars to fix a damaged camper outlet. The Fortress PowerLock is designed to cover your shore power cord access door to protect your RV power cords from being cut and stolen. It’s the only lock available specifically designed for shore power cords in the industry.

Features of the Fortress PowerLock include:

Lock covers shore power cord access door to protect RV power cords from being cut and stolen
Prevents theft associated with opening access door and removing power cords
Easy installation
Lock and keys included
Available in black or white high impact powder coat aircraft grade aluminum
Legendary Lifetime Warranty
Proudly made in the USA

Kit includes:

Fortress PowerLock
Two keys
All the mounting hardware

Trailer step proximity a problem? We have a solution!

Bill C Blog 1At Torklift, our main priority is making life easier for campers – and when it comes to trailer steps, there’s no exception! Recently, we worked with a customer who wanted to upgrade their steps, but didn’t want to go with a ladder or drawbridge-style step that allows mud, water, sand and other debris to get inside the RV. He also didn’t want to stay with his factory RV steps due to their instability. Instead, Bill chose to install the GlowStep Revolution:

“Your steps are awesome. They indeed do everything I expected… they solve every problem that most steps have. They contact the ground, so they are stable. They are not inside the trailer like the MORRyde ones, which have to be deployed perfectly… I love these steps.”
-Bill Charmichael

Proximity Is No Issue
Although there are many new kinds of steps for trailers on the market that are an upgrade to current factory direct designs, they do have their disadvantages. One of the most prevalent issues that are common with these new steps is that they are designed to install within the doorway and have to be lowered down. That means not only do you have to stand underneath it to lower them down, you must also have a certain amount of room next to your doorway in order to deploy these steps. This could be very inconvenient in many circumstances including storage facilities, stopping at gas stations and tight camping spots.

GlowStep Revolution StepsProximity is not an issue with the GlowStep Revolution

On the other hand, GlowStep Revolution trailer steps are designed to store inside the existing factory compartment underneath your doorway. Once installed, they require minimal effort and space to deploy, so no matter where you’re parked, you will be able to use your GlowStep Revolution steps. Similar to the staircase found in your home, the GlowStep Revolution entry step system also has the shortest riser height in the industry at only 7.5-inches.

All Terrain Landing Gear
Bill C Blog 2Another feature that Bill mentioned he enjoys with his GlowStep Revolution is that these trailer steps are versatile and flexible to adapt to any type of terrain. With the All Terrain Landing Gear adjustable feet, your RV scissor steps connect firmly to ground level and eliminate the unsafe diving board feeling associated with factory trailer steps.

The All Terrain Landing Gear leveling feet for RV steps aren’t the only addition available for this step system. There are also accessories that make a complete system that includes safety support and cleaning for your steps. There is the GlowGuide Handrail to make getting in and out of your RV easier and safer, the SafeStep barrier for pet friendly steps and DirtDestroyer which is a shoe cleaning attachment to prevent debris from coming into the RV.

“I will gladly give a very positive review of the installed [GlowStep Revolution] steps to anyone. They are awesome.”
-Bill

Problems stopping when towing heavy loads? Here’s your solution

Byers F350 Adventurer89RBS TorkliftSystem 6.27.17When it comes to towing behind your truck, many people think that as long as you attach a ballmount to a hitch on a vehicle, you’re set to haul anything and everything. While we’ve covered the basics before in another blog, How to Tow a Trailer, there’s one major aspect we didn’t mention when it comes to towing safely behind your truck and what towing does to your truck and trailer suspension.

In particular, how to deal with problems stopping when towing heavy loads, especially when your truck is squatting too much. We covered that your hitch needs to be the correct class and that your vehicle is capable of carrying the load, and while that’s all true - is your truck suspension also up to the task? If not, you could have major issues with stopping as well as handling complications such as swaying, porpoising and sag.

b2ap3 thumbnail trucksagIf your trailer has too much weight, it can make your truck sag while towing!

TLI SL Blog 4

There are a wide variety of suspension improvements, but which one is the best one? Here’s a short list of some of the most common suspension kits available:

Shocks: A mechanical or hydraulic device designed to absorb and dampen shock impulses. Some types even allow you to tune the ride by control of the valve, but can be quite pricey and maintenance can be expensive.
Airbags: One of the most common suspension upgrades, but that’s not necessarily a good thing. It’s expensive not only to purchase airbags, but also have them installed and repaired as well. They are very capable of lifting a vehicle for towing to prevent sag, but are notorious for leaks. They also cause a destabilizing effect by lifting a majority of weight off the vehicle suspension.
Bump stops: A simple design, bump stops are meant to be installed to prevent metal on metal contact. As the suspension undergoes high-compression such as turning a corner or hitting a speed bump, they soak up the shock. They can force your shocks to work harder because they don’t engage as quickly with the bump stops installed.TLI SL Blog 6
Sway bars: Another common suspension upgrade, sway bars help reduce the body roll that comes with towing heavy loads and can improve cornering. But, over time the sway bars can cause cracked mounts and also stiffen your ride which can make long trips uncomfortable.

With lack of control when stopping, you’ll find yourself gripping your steering wheel. The key to getting the stability you need is figuring out the best way on how to improve suspension and taking the steps to making your towing experience safer. There are many ways to upgrade suspension, but are the ones listed above the best suspension upgrades? We would argue no, but what else can you do to improve your ride while you’re towing without having to spend thousands on truck and trailer supplies?

Torklift introduces the StableLoad suspension enhancement. A StableLoad improves the vehicle’s handling by pre-activating the stabilizing effect that was designed for rear suspension. This keeps the vehicle manufacturer’s factory installed overload leaf springs under load the way the manufacturer’s designed them to function. The quad contact design compliments the specific vehicle engineered suspension that manufacturers invested millions of dollars developing. Since the lower StableLoad turns on and off, you get a smooth and comfortable ride even with the product activated for towing.

StableLoad Science

TLI SL Blog 7With the StableLoads, see and feel a dramatic reduction in side-to-side sway, body roll while you’re towing and when your trailer brakes. The StableLoads keep your vehicle level reducing stopping distance, suspension wear and tire wear. Another unique feature of the StableLoad is that it can be turned on and off depending on whether you’re towing or not. This means that you can return to your normal factory suspension when you’re not towing behind your truck.

Torklift also provides a 30-day money back guarantee on these suspension wedges no matter where they were purchased. If you are not satisfied with your StableLoads in the first 30 days, with a receipt a refund up to minimum resale price will be given. This is in place to ensure you are happy with your purchase.

If you have any questions about the StableLoad towing suspension product, visit our StableLoad page here or feel free to contact us at 800-246-8132. You can also email our tech support directly at support@torklift.com. If you are tired of problems stopping when towing, you can also purchase the StableLoads from a Torklift Certified Dealer near you by visiting our Where to Buy page.

Towing 101: What are the different trailer hitch classes?

Truck CamperAt Torklift we strive to help educate customers so they can learn everything they need to get on the road safely and have a fun time. Whether you’re a newbie wanting to buy your first hitch, or a veteran who’s had many hitches before, it’s always best to do research to find the best hitch class you need for your vehicle to fit your needs.

The hitch is one of the starting points that ensures you’ll have fun on your next adventure because it helps you bring your bike rack or tow trailers behind your vehicle for camping trips or big toys like ATVs or dirt bikes. Learn all you need to know about the different hitch classes that exist and get some ideas of what you’ll be able to tow or haul with each:

hitch class2

1.) Class I Hitch

Class I Hitch

Considered weight carrying hitches – Class I hitches are typically rated up to a maximum of 200 tongue weight and 2,000 pounds towing and traditionally come in a 1 ¼” receiver with few hitches available in 2” as well. Most vehicles in this hitch class include compact cars, sedans and SUVs. Class I hitches are perfect for smaller accessories or towing small trailers.

Examples of what you can use/tow: bike rack, cargo trays, small tent camper, jet skis

2.) Class II Hitch

Class II Hitch

Class II hitches are also considered weight carrying hitches similar to Class I hitches, but have the ability to handle more weight. Typically rated around 350 pounds tongue weight and a maximum of 3,500 pounds towing, this type of hitch also traditionally comes in both 1 ¼” and 2” receiver sizes. Vehicles in this hitch class are usually sedans and SUVs.

Examples of what you can use/tow: bike rack, small campers, jet skis, boats

3.) Class III Hitch

Class III hitchClass III hitches are what you normally see on small trucks, SUVs and larger sedans. These hitches tend to be rated at around 500/600 pounds tongue weight and up to a maximum of 5,000 pounds towing and normally come in 2” receivers. There are adapters available where you can convert your 2” to a 1 ¼” receiver, but we would suggest getting the receiver size you need so you don’t have to use the adapters while hauling heavier loads.

Another fun fact about this class of trailer hitches is that you can start using weight distribution to help even out the load you are towing, prevent sag around the tongue of the trailer and be able to tow more weight. Not all hitches available are rated for both weight carrying and weight distributing, so this is where your research will come in handy, especially if you plan on hauling heavier trailers and are going to need weight distribution.

Examples of what you can use/tow: medium sized campers, jet skis, utility trailers, boats, bike rack, cargo trays and more

4.) Class IV Hitch

chevy TRAILER

Have a large truck and a beefy looking hitch? You probably have a Class IV hitch. These hitches are typically rated around 1,000/1,200 pounds tongue weight and a maximum of 12,000 pounds towing. They come in 2” receivers, but there are some 2.5” receivers available. Class IV hitches are where you start getting into the heavier towing and will most likely need weight distribution for what you’re planning to pull.

Examples of what you can use/tow: trailers, large boats, toy haulers, small travel trailers, utility trailers

5.) Class V Hitch

Class V Hitch

The highest class available for hitches (well, kind of – we’ll explain more below) made for large SUVs, pickup trucks and vans. These hitches are typically rated around 1,200/1,700 pounds tongue weight and 20,000 pounds towing, and come in 2” and 2.5” receivers. Class V hitches are where you are doing the heaviest towing, will need weight distribution and most likely sway control to help make your towing experience more enjoyable and easier to drive down the road.

Examples of what you can use/tow: large trailers, equipment haulers, multi-car trailers, large boats, toy haulers, large travel trailers, utility trailer

o To the right is a photo of the SuperHitch Original 20K – rated at 2,000 pounds tongue and 20,000 pounds towing with weight distribution. This is a great example of a Class V hitch that is strong enough to tow heavy duty items – especially with its dual truss design that adds strength and stability

6.) Beyond Class V Hitch

SuperHitch MagnumNow that it’s 2018, trucks are getting more heavy duty and are manufactured with greater strength to tow and haul heavier trailers and RVs. Hitches must keep up with demand. Recently, there are hitches coming out with a 21,000 pound tow rating from the factory which is the highest that many companies go on ratings.

But, there is another hitch available that is the only one if its kind. Not as expensive as a custom hitch of the same weight rating, there is a bolt-on hitch that comes ready to install. This is the SuperHitch Magnum. This hitch is rated at 3,000 pounds tongue and 30,000 pounds towing with weight distribution. Which means that when it comes to towing with this hitch, the only limit is how much your truck can handle!

Also made with a patented dual receiver design, the SuperHitch Magnum is the strongest and safest hitch available that will literally exceed all your towing needs.

How to Tow a Trailer

sh4Do you plan on boating this summer? What about camping with some big toys like ATVs and dirt bikes? If you are planning on doing any kind of outdoor adventures that will involve you bringing extra cargo or a trailer, chances are you'll need to tow with a trailer hitch! While it may seem intimidating, setting up and towing a trailer is easier than it looks.

The following information on towing basics applies to most towing applications whether the trailer hitch is towing a boat, a car, or travel trailers and other items that need a lift from point A to point B. What it basically comes down to for hitch towing is: weight! Weight is incredibly important when it comes to towing, both knowing how much weight your trailer hitch can tow and how much weight your truck, hitch and ball mount can handle. Learn more below.

1. Make sure your vehicle is rated for towing the load
Before you even being loading up the trailer, you need to make sure that your truck is strong enough to tow the weight you are wanting to haul. You need to check to determine the weight limits in the owner's manual and determine the appropriate hitch to have installed.

Tongue Weight

• You need to find a few numbers before towing:

o The gross trailer weight (GTW), which is how much the trailer weighs fully loaded
o The maximum tongue weight for your vehicle to determine the class of hitch you'll need to tow the load
o The maximum weight of the trailer tow vehicle combined which should never be exceeded, also known as the gross combination weight rating (GCWR)

2. Make sure your hitch is the appropriate class
Now that you have all the weight rating numbers - is your hitch strong enough to tow all the weight you need?

• Hitch Class 1: 200 pounds tongue weight, 2,000 pounds towing weight
• Hitch Class 2: 350 pounds tongue weight, 3,500 pounds towing weight
• Hitch Class 3: 500 pounds tongue weight, 5,000 pounds towing weight
• Hitch Class 4: 1,000/1,200 pounds tongue weight, maximum of 12,000 pounds towing weight
• Hitch Class 5: 1,700/3,000 pounds tongue weight, maximum of 17,000/30,000 pounds towing weight

prevent any potential rusting of your frame from the drilling

• Beyond Class 5: As trucks are getting more heavy duty and are manufacturers are coming out with 21,000 pound tow rated hitches. Also, Torklift has a bolt-on hitch, the SuperHitch Magnum, which is rated at 3,000 pounds tongue and 30,000 pounds towing with weight distribution

Depending on your application, it's often that trucks are used to both tow and haul at the same time. If the cargo in the truck bed blocks the trailer hitch receiver by crossing the threshold of the vehicles rear-end, you'll need specific towing equipment to uphold your ability to tow. The SuperHitch SuperTruss extension pairs perfectly with each model of SuperHitch to give you the ability and convenience of extending your tow hitch in the safest way possible. Take advantage of the versatility of your tow vehicle by giving it the tools it needs to go big.

Not sure if you can install the hitch yourself or need to take it into an aftermarket shop or dealership? Watch the video below to see how to install a trailer hitch and how easy the SuperHitch is to install:

3. Attach the trailer to the vehicle
Trailer TongueNow that you have all the weight rating measurements, the correct hitch installed on your truck and the proper ball mount installed in your hitch receiver, you're ready to hook up your trailer! Use the tongue jack to raise the trailer and align it with the ball mount installed on the hitch. Lower the trailer tongue down onto the ball and secure the tongue.

The trailer tongue is on the ballmount installed in your hitch, now you cross the safety chains to the hooks near the vehicle hitch frame, making sure that there is enough slack in the chains, but not so much that they drag on the ground or else sparks will be flying! If your trailer is on the heavier side, it might be a good idea to consider weight distribution for your hitch to even out your towing load.

4. Activate the lights with the wiring harness
7 Pin WiringNow that you have your trailer hitched up, now it's time to hook up the wiring harness. The wiring harness is incredibly important when it comes to towing because it makes sure that your trailer's brake lights, turn signal and other connections between the truck and trailer function properly.

Generally, wiring harnesses employ a simple color-coded connection that makes it easy to hook up the lights to the harness. Because of this, it should make it easy to install the connector properly to the tow vehicle's harness.

5. Final Checks
Now that you have installed the hitch, hooked up the trailer and installed the safety chains, you should be ready to tow behind your truck! But, before you drive off, it's important to do final checks to ensure that everything is 100% good to go. This includes:

• Check the tongue weight once fully loaded to make sure you are still within the safe zone of towing weight
• Make sure everything is secured down and that your lighting is plugged in and running properly
• Look at your tires and make sure they are inflated correctly for proper towing

6. Drive! ford trailer 2You are now ready for your adventure! Don't forget that your driving style while towing should be different than how you drive in your typical vehicle. Your vehicle and trailer are much less maneuverable and nimble than your car or truck is without a trailer. It's critical that you always compensate for the added length the trailer adds when you change lanes so that you don't run anyone off the road as well as increasing your stopping distance behind other drivers.

How to repair a shore power cord

Shore Power Repair Blog 1

Being able to power your RV while traveling is essential. If your shore power cord is damaged or you are a victim of power cord theft, you have options as far as what kind of replacement cord you can purchase. There are two different styles of shore cords and depending on your RV, it may require a small or larger number of amps to power it.

How do I determine what style or how many amps I will need?

Amp ratings

There are two different amp rating shore cords available. What do the amps mean? Here’s an example: If you have a 30-amp rig, you can run one air conditioner and a few other appliances at the same time but not much else. If you have a 50-amp RV plug, then you can plug in and run almost every appliance in your rig at the same time. More amps means more power.

Option one: 30-amp cord that can provide power for a smaller to average sized RV (three prongs)
Option two: 50-amp cord that can provide power for an average to larger sized RV (four prongs)

Different Styles Available

There are two different styles that are available for replacement cords:

Option one- A detachable cord that is plugged into both the RV and outlet which allows you to easily detach and secure the cord. This type of shore cord can easily be replaced and stored in the RV when not in use. If stolen or damaged, it can possibly be expensive to replace, but it’s the only thing that would need to be replaced.

Shore Power Repair Blog 2Example of a 30-amp external cord

Option two- this cord is wired directly to the junction box (and probably already came standard on your RV), which is your RV’s power wiring box. In older RVs the cord is bunched into a small compartment while newer RVs now offer a retractable cord roller for easy storage. If this cord is stolen or damaged, you will have to rewire this shore cord back into the junction box. It could cost you a few hundred dollars to repair the damage and replace the cord.

Shore Power Repair 6Example of a 30-amp cord that is wired to your RV

Each amp rating can be found in both of the cord styles, so it comes down to what is going to meet your needs the best. Now you’ve determined the best shore cord to fit your needs and installed it on your trailer, how are you going to protect it from theft?

The Fortress PowerLock

Shore Power Repair Blog 4Torklift has designed a shore power cord cover called the Fortress PowerLock, to protect the RV power cord from being cut or stolen. This is the only lock available for shore power cords in the industry.  Crafted out of aircraft grade aluminum, the locking shore power hatch is available in a white or black high impact powder coating. This product, like many other Torklift products, comes with a Legendary Lifetime Warranty. The Fortress PowerLock is easy to install and has a lock with a set of keys included.

How do I install the Fortress PowerLock?

Designed for easy installation, the Fortress PowerLock only takes minutes to give you peace of mind when it comes to your shore power. For installation instructions, visit our recent blog on how to install this RV electrical hatch.

Should I leave my RV battery plugged in all winter?

RV Battery Blog 1Winter is near and hopefully you’re prepping your RV so once spring season comes, your trailer still in tip top shape for camping. Have you completed everything on your checklist? Don’t forget that one of the most important steps for winter storage is to keep your batteries in good shape! A common mistake that RV owners make is leaving their battery plugged into the RV converter to maintain its charge while in storage.

Why shouldn’t I keep my batteries plugged in all winter?

RV Battery Blog 2Keeping your batteries plugged in all winter long results in overcharging the battery. RV battery converters charge at a constant voltage that is too high for the battery over such a long period of time. Overcharging results in a fried battery that will no longer function to its full potential. The constant high voltage causes the electrolytes necessary for battery function to boil out, leaving the battery permanently damaged. Battery replacement can cost hundreds of dollars.

Should I leave it unplugged all winter?

That’s also not recommended. If your battery is left sitting and discharges to low enough levels for a long period of time, it will no longer be able to perform or charge up to its full potential. The battery charge capacity is also effected and won’t hold charges for as long as it had originally. Many think a quick fix is just to simply add water and recharge. This unfortunately doesn’t help the battery regain its charging ability. You’re still stuck with a battery that isn’t operating to its full potential.

What can I do to AVOID either overcharging or undercharging my RV batteries?

RV Battery Blog 3Torklift has designed a high-quality locking aluminum solar battery box called the PowerArmor Solar. It features a lockable slide top that can easily be accessed no matter the mounting location.  This box comes in a bright tread diamond plate design featuring a black high impact powder-coated frame for durability. The box bolts directly to RV, trailer tongue, boat, camper bumper, etc. The PowerArmor Solar also has an access port that allows electrical wires to pass through the side wall of the box to easily connect to your electrical circuit system and keep them safe.

More features of the PowerArmor Solar include:

• Prevent common and expensive storage/battery theft (lock included)
• Maintains charge increasing the longevity of the batteries up to 400% to avoid premature battery replacement (solar only)
• Dual use for securing batteries and other gear
• Bolts to your RV, camper bumper, boat, truck, van, etc.
• Heavy gauge diamond plate aluminum for maximum durability
• Designed specifically to access RV batteries avoiding interference with your RV
• Uses a 10 watt solar panel (solar only)
• Comes in bright tread diamond plate featuring black high impact powder coat frame
• Multiple box sizes available holding up to five batteries
• Adjustable dividers for custom size compartment storage (PowerArmor Max only)
• Acid neutralizing battery mat to avoid corrosion
• Legendary Lifetime Warranty
• Proudly made in the USA

How does the PowerArmor Solar keep my batteries charged?

RV Battery Blog 4The PowerArmor Solar locking battery box features a Zamp 10-watt solar panel that extends battery life up to 400% and prevents premature battery replacement. This means that you can keep your battery plugged into the PowerArmor Solar all winter and it will trickle charge your battery – ensuring that it maintains its existing condition all winter. The slow trickle charge reduces the chances of both over and undercharging with exposure to sunlight.

But what if I have more than one battery?

The PowerArmor and PowerArmor Solar are offered in multiple different sizes for all your RVing and boat battery needs. Including the PowerArmor MAX that holds up to five batteries.

• PowerArmor Single*: 17-inch box can hold one group 24-27 battery (perfect for marine applications).
• PowerArmor DH and PowerArmor Solar: 24-inch box can hold up to two group 24-27 batteries. The 26-inch box can hold up to two group 24-27 batteries, and two group 31 batteries.
• PowerArmor MAX: 58-inch box can hold up to two group 24-27 batteries, two group 31, four 31 or 27, or five group 24 batteries.

Torklift’s PowerArmor Solar battery box meets all your needs and protects your batteries over the winter season. For questions or more information on the PowerArmor and PowerArmor Solar, call us at 800.246.8132 or visit our website torklift.com.

How do I properly maintain my RV batteries?

RV Battery Blog 1

Are you in need of a solution to avoid undercharging or overcharging your RV batteries? The two most common causes of RV battery failure are these two issues – undercharging and overcharging, which lead to you having to pay to replace your batteries sooner than you should have to. This costs you both time and money that you could have used toward your camping trips.

When batteries go long periods of time with no charge or not fully recharging between cycles, the battery no longer performs at its full potential with the sulfate material hardening into crystals. This results in batteries that lose the ability to hold a charge, which is also known as sulfation. If left on a charger for too long, this results in overcharging the battery which causes severe water loss and plate corrosion, leaving you with a fried battery… and empty wallet.

RV Battery Blog 2

So, what’s the best way to maintain your batteries? At Torklift, we have designed a high-quality locking aluminum battery box called the PowerArmor and PowerArmor Solar. They both feature a lockable slide top that can easily be accessed no matter the mounting location. The PowerArmor Solar is built with a Zamp, 10-watt solar panel that extends battery life up to 400% and prevents premature battery replacement – saving you money and frustration of batteries going bad! The PowerArmor boxes come with a heavy gauge diamond plate that features a black high-impact powder coated frame. Boxes can bolt directly to your RV, boat, trailer tongue, camper bumper and more.

Another great feature of the PowerArmor is the access port that allows electrical wires to pass through the side wall of the box, easily connecting the RV batteries to your electrical circuit system and keeping the batteries locked safely inside – giving you easy access wherever you store it. The solar panel attached to the lid of the PowerArmor Solar allows your batteries to slowly trickle charge with its easy wiring system. This means that you prevent overcharging and undercharging your batteries when the panel is exposed to minimal sunlight – making your batteries last much longer than they normally would in any other storage condition.

Will the PowerArmor hold and charge multiple batteries?

The PowerArmor is available in many different sizes to fit all your RVing and boating needs.

RV Battery Blog 3PowerArmor and PowerArmor Solar

• 17-inch box can hold up to one group 24-27 battery
• 24-inch box can hold up to two group 24-27 batteries
• 26-inch box can hold up to two group 24-27 batteries, and two group 31 batteries

PowerArmor MAX

• 58-inch box can hold up to two group 24-27 batteries, two group 31, four 31 or 27, or five group 24 batteries.

It’s that easy?

Yes! But, don’t just take our word for it. George Brown commented on Torklift International’s Facebook page with a review on how much he enjoys his PowerArmor Solar and how it makes his life easier...

  5. Reinstall your original hardware through the three holes in the electrical hatch (shown to the right)
    1. Optional: If you feel that the original mounting hardware or condition of the original holes is not up to the task of securing the power cord, the four remaining holes can be screwed into place.
  6. PowerLock Blog 4Pre-drill the remaining four holes in the Fortress PowerLock with a 1/8” drill bit, and install the four #10 x 1¼” stainless steel self-tapping screws (shown to the right). After the screws have been installed, remove any excess sealant away from the edges of the Fortress PowerLock.

Now it’s installed and ready for use! See how easy that was? All you need to do is close the door, insert the key and turn it clockwise and your shore cord is protected! Below is a video demonstrating how the Fortress PowerLock shore power cord door provides the ultimate protection:

If you have any questions on how to install this shore power protection or for more information about the Fortress PowerLock, contact us at 800.246.8132!

How much propane do I need?

Propane Blog 1

Short answer is, it depends! When speaking with our resident Torklift RV expert Darrel, he said, “the most important thing is to make sure you fill them up before you go!” In an RV or trailer, the furnace is the biggest consumer of propane; with the oven coming in second depending on how much cooking you plan on doing. Another factor to consider is the length of your trip, is it going to be long or a quick trip? You may need to shower which also requires propane for the water heater. Trying to determine how much propane you’re going to use varies with every scenario, so we’ll take you through a few to help give you an idea.

California vs. Alaska

Planning a trip to California or Alaska? Let’s say you’re planning a series of vacations and the first trip is going to be California during the month of August. In this situation, you are going to have warm weather and will probably only need propane if you are going to cook or grill. Essentially, using very little to none. Where is your next trip? How about Alaska in November? For these kinds of conditions, you’ll need more propane because you will likely be using your furnace, needing warm water for showers and propane for cooking as well.

How much does propane cost?

Propane Blog 2Before you can purchase the actual propane gas, you’ll need an LP tank to hold it in, and prices vary between brands. For example, an empty Bernzomatic 20-pound tank starts at $32.97 and another brand is Worthington Pro Grade which is an 11-pound tank that starts at $56.97. After you’ve purchased the tanks, you need to fill the tank with propane. Just like the different brands of tanks, propane prices vary as well. Mostly it will depend on how big your tank is and how much gas you’ll need to fill it up, which can run you anywhere from $15 to $30. Also, if you have two tanks you’ll need to multiply your cost by two. Two tanks is a clever idea for the many situations that can arise while camping and as a backup if you use all the propane from the first tank.

Another cost to consider is the unthinkable – what if your tanks get stolen? While it’s an unfortunate occurrence, it’s not uncommon. You have just returned from your hike and both of your propane tanks are missing, the lines on your RV have been cut and now you have to pay $500 for the repair and replacement costs. With propane tank theft on the rise, what can you do to prevent this?

The Fortress GasLock

Propane Blog 3Torklift has designed a product that can safely secure your propane tanks called the Fortress GasLock. This is an investment that protects your investment.

It requires no tools and only takes seconds to install. The Fortress GasLock works with most common threaded rods (fits available for 3/8” and ½” size applications), and is designed for dual tank usage. Constructed out of military grade aluminum with a high impact powder coat, this is the only lock available that is specifically designed for RV propane tanks in the industry. There is also an Airstream version available if you have one of those iconic trailers.

Further features of the Fortress GasLock include:

• Avoid typical propane tank theft repairs exceeding $500
• Allows tanks to be quickly locked when mounted to trailers, towables and RVs
• Does not interfere with LP tank valves and can be filled while locked
• No tools, no modifications, installs in seconds
• Affordable investment
• Designed for dual tanks
• High impact powder coated military grade aluminum
• Fits available for all applications
• Only lock available for propane tanks in the industry
• Proudly made in the USA

Kit includes:

• One GasLock assembly
• Lock and keys
• Theft deterrent decal

What’s Your Trailer Legacy?

GSR Legacy Blog 1Have you ever sat down, maybe in the morning during your coffee time, or at night once everyone has gone to bed and thought: what’s my “trailer legacy?” We know, it sounds like a weird question, but it’s interesting to think about. What trailer do you currently have and how will it stand up to the test of time – especially when it comes to keeping your loved ones safe? Little did you know that you can bring your step investment with you from trailer to trailer. Whether upgrading or downsizing, invest in a safe set of steps that will stick with you for a lifetime.

The GlowStep Revolution trailer steps are designed to be a legacy step system. Giving you the ability to add or remove steps, take the GlowStep Revolution with you when you trade in for your next RV. If you know that the trailer you currently have isn’t the last trailer you will ever own, save your old factory steps and take the GlowStep Revolution with you when you upgrade to your next ultimate 5th wheel, toy hauler or travel trailer.GSR Legacy Blog 2

Similar to the staircase found in your home, the GlowStep Revolution entry step system has the shortest riser height in the industry at only 7.5-inches. It stores inside the factory opening that already exists so all your storage opens up for more gear you want to bring along. Along with the All Terrain Landing Gear that comes standard with the steps, you have the ultimate in safe entry and exit from your trailer. The adjustable feet are like planting roots each time you deploy the steps, ensuring your family stay safe and the trailer doesn’t bounce around when someone is going up and down the stairs.

While the steps are an investment up front – if you think about it, taking the steps with you makes your investment all worth it because you still have amazing steps for your trailer and don’t have to deal with unsafe and unstable factory steps – or purchase new steps. Plus, while your trailer may not have a lifetime warranty, your GlowStep Revolution does. It comes with our Legendary Lifetime Warranty ensuring that your steps last for a lifetime.

Features of the GlowStep Revolution Include:

GSR Legacy Blog 3• Only RV step system with 7 inches of vertical precision elevation adjustment
