StableLoadManufacturers spent millions of dollars and over a hundred years investing in truck suspensions to ensure TWO major things: that it rides like a car and is comfortable, as well as its ability to safely tow or haul incredibly heavy loads. When a truck is loaded, the spring pack engages when you’re towing or hauling. On a truck without StableLoads, once you begin to tow or haul with your truck, pressure is applied too late on the factory overload stabilizer springs of your vehicle’s suspension. The problem is that there isn’t enough stability to support the load, resulting in poor handling characteristics. Here are just a few towing issues you may have experienced with no StableLoad installed:

• Side-to-Side Sway
• Body Roll
• Porpoising
• Truck Sag/Squat

stableloads2The effects of hauling with and without the StableLoad are clear to see!

How are your towing issues handled with the StableLoad? By "pre-activating" the stabilizing effect designed for rear springs by keeping them actively under load the way your vehicle factory engineers designed them to operate. Unlike any other suspension upgrade, the StableLoad suspension stabilizers work with the factory suspension on your vehicle, allowing them to work the way they were designed to, improving safety, handling, sag, body roll, and porpoising while towing and hauling.

Upper and Lower Applications Available

Upper SL IUThe Torklift StableLoad comes in two application styles. The lower quick-disconnect StableLoad and the upper StableLoad. Designed to replace smaller, inefficient factory overload bump stop pads, the upper StableLoads engage the upper overload stabilizer spring rather than the lower overload stabilizer spring which is what the lower StableLoad is designed for. With both upper and lower StableLoads combined, they resolve all the issues that you would encounter when needing a suspension upgrade. The bonus with the lower StableLoad? It can be engaged and disengaged in seconds to return to your factory ride.

Balancing Act: How to Improve Handling While Towing

StableLoad_IU_fade

“Leaf-spring suspensions on trucks must be capable of hauling a maximum payload and still provide a comfortable ride under no-load conditions.” This is the opening phrase to the Nov. 2017 article in Trailer Life Magazine that discusses truck suspensions and how to improve ride quality without having to spend an arm and a leg for suspension upgrades. Many suspensions that are designed to carry heavier loads including truck campers, travel trailers and fifth-wheels, are usually equipped with overload leaf-springs… and that’s where the StableLoad comes into play!

Leaf SpringsYour truck's leaf springs are designed to handle heavy loads, but sometimes
they need help to improve ride quality and safety!

Before testing to see how the StableLoads improved the ride quality of their fully loaded 2012 F-350 regular-cab pickup, here’s what Ed had to say about the handling of the truck:

Installing SL

“Driving a predetermined test route with newly installed lower StableLoads disconnected revealed the suspension handled the weight of the camper well with only slight bouncing on smooth roads and minor body roll while cornering. However, when driving on a rough road with potholes and bumps, bouncing and body roll increased noticeably, as they often do when transitioning from smooth to rough roads.”

- Ed Bolduc, Trailer Life Magazine

The StableLoad

StableLoad IU fadeThe StableLoad suspension upgrade is meant to assist your truck with heavy loads associated with towing a trailer or hauling a truck camper. Installed on your truck’s rear overload suspension, it dramatically improves vehicle handling characteristics by "pre-activating" the stabilizing effect and keeping the springs actively under load.

“After engaging the lower StableLoads, the sag at the rear axle decreased to just 1/2-inch [after previously having a 1 1/8-inch squat]. The change in altitude of the truck, although small, could be felt in the driver’s seat. A trip down the same rough road resulted in a considerable decrease in bouncing and body roll. Even on smooth surfaces, the stabilizers improved the F-350’s handling noticeably.”

- Ed Bolduc, Trailer Life Magazine

Vehicle factory engineers designed suspension overload springs to operate a specific four-point system, and the StableLoad maintains all four points of contact in the springs rather than reducing it to two points of contact like other aftermarket suspension products. When installed on your truck, you have the ultimate stability and safety while towing a trailer behind your truck.

Fitments

“We also tested the lower StableLoads while towing several fifth-wheels and travel trailers. As expected, the stabilizers made a clear improvement in handling and controlling suspension bounce and body roll when towing heavy fifth-wheels. Sag was decreased, and the headlights maintained proper alignment.”

- Ed Bolduc, Trailer Life Magazine

Problems stopping when towing heavy loads? Here’s your solution

Byers F350 Adventurer89RBS TorkliftSystem 6.27.17When it comes to towing behind your truck, many people think that as long as you attach a ballmount to a hitch on a vehicle, you’re set to haul anything and everything. While we’ve covered the basics before in another blog, How to Tow a Trailer, there’s one major aspect we didn’t mention when it comes to towing safely behind your truck and what towing does to your truck and trailer suspension.

In particular, how to deal with problems stopping when towing heavy loads, especially when your truck is squatting too much. We covered that your hitch needs to be the correct class and that your vehicle is capable of carrying the load, and while that’s all true - is your truck suspension also up to the task? If not, you could have major issues with stopping as well as handling complications such as swaying, porpoising and sag.

b2ap3 thumbnail trucksagIf your trailer has too much weight, it can make your truck sag while towing!

TLI SL Blog 4

There are a wide variety of suspension improvements, but which one is the best one? Here’s a short list of some of the most common suspension kits available:

Shocks: A mechanical or hydraulic device designed to absorb and dampen shock impulses. Some types even allow you to tune the ride by control of the valve, but can be quite pricey and maintenance can be expensive.
Airbags: One of the most common suspension upgrades, but that’s not necessarily a good thing. It’s expensive not only to purchase airbags, but also have them installed and repaired as well. They are very capable of lifting a vehicle for towing to prevent sag, but are notorious for leaks. They also cause a destabilizing effect by lifting a majority of weight off the vehicle suspension.
Bump stops: A simple design, bump stops are meant to be installed to prevent metal on metal contact. As the suspension undergoes high-compression such as turning a corner or hitting a speed bump, they soak up the shock. They can force your shocks to work harder because they don’t engage as quickly with the bump stops installed.TLI SL Blog 6
Sway bars: Another common suspension upgrade, sway bars help reduce the body roll that comes with towing heavy loads and can improve cornering. But, over time the sway bars can cause cracked mounts and also stiffen your ride which can make long trips uncomfortable.

With lack of control when stopping, you’ll find yourself gripping your steering wheel. The key to getting the stability you need is figuring out the best way on how to improve suspension and taking the steps to making your towing experience safer. There are many ways to upgrade suspension, but are the ones listed above the best suspension upgrades? We would argue no, but what else can you do to improve your ride while you’re towing without having to spend thousands on truck and trailer supplies?

Torklift introduces the StableLoad suspension enhancement. A StableLoad improves the vehicle’s handling by pre-activating the stabilizing effect that was designed for rear suspension. This keeps the vehicle manufacturer’s factory installed overload leaf springs under load the way the manufacturer’s designed them to function. The quad contact design compliments the specific vehicle engineered suspension that manufacturers invested millions of dollars developing. Since the lower StableLoad turns on and off, you get a smooth and comfortable ride even with the product activated for towing.

StableLoad Science

TLI SL Blog 7With the StableLoads, see and feel a dramatic reduction in side-to-side sway, body roll while you’re towing and when your trailer brakes. The StableLoads keep your vehicle level reducing stopping distance, suspension wear and tire wear. Another unique feature of the StableLoad is that it can be turned on and off depending on whether you’re towing or not. This means that you can return to your normal factory suspension when you’re not towing behind your truck.

Torklift also provides a 30-day money back guarantee on these suspension wedges no matter where they were purchased. If you are not satisfied with your StableLoads in the first 30 days, with a receipt a refund up to minimum resale price will be given. This is in place to ensure you are happy with your purchase.

Top 3 Stressors on You and Your Truck

Stressors On You and Your Truck

poundsHave you ever watched the TV show Mythbusters on the Discovery Channel? One of the oldest and most popular television shows on Discovery, the television series tests validity of rumors and myths by applying scientific method. With their experiments, the ultimate truth is exposed and common myths are debunked.

In an effort to reveal the capabilities of Torklift International StableLoad suspension upgrade we too, turned to science. In our own version of Mythbusters, we conducted a series of tests to address an important question:

Do suspension upgrades actually work?
We loaded a 2015 Ford F150 truck with 2,800 pounds to simulate significant payload. For an in-depth assessment, the loaded Ford truck is tested through the top three stressors to your vehicle that replicate common handling issues.

What are the three stressors on you and your truck?

  1. Side-to-side sway = Large pot hole
  2. Porpoising (front-to-back motion) = Speed Bump
  3. Body roll = Cornering

inclinometerAll of these movements create stress on your vehicle and the driver. These three handling issues cause stress because if the vehicle doesn’t have the proper suspension to support its payload, the driver is more likely to lose control of the vehicle.

To measure degrees of movement, an inclinometer was mounted to the Ford F-150 truck. The inclinometer measures horizontal and vertical tilt.

The Ford truck was driven through the course to uncover the best and most effective suspension upgrade for your vehicle. To set a baseline, we recorded measurements of the factory suspension with no suspension upgrades.  Second, we installed airbags at 100-psi air pressure. Finally, we put the StableLoad suspension stabilizeruspension stabilizer to the test.

The results may surprise you.

Take a look:

wedge packThe outcome of our test relied on science to prove StableLoads as the clear winner. Torklift’s version of Mythbusters showed that suspension upgrades actually do work, and that StableLoads have the greatest affect on handling characteristics of a vehicle when it comes to side-to-side sway, porpoising and body roll. If you often use your truck to haul or tow heavy payload, the StableLoads should be the first suspension modification to consider.

What makes StableLoads so effective? It’s simple.

By pre-activating the strength within factory leaf spring suspension, the StableLoads tap into the overload leaf springs for extra support when towing or hauling heavy payload like a truck camper, fifth wheel, or any type of trailer.

The use of precision laser-crafted wedge plates that fill the space between the factory leaf spring pack and overload leaf spring triggers support from the vehicle’s suspension. The power of the factory suspension is initiated and put to maximum use.

Leaf Springs w No StableLoad

Applicable to any truck, van, SUV or small commercial vehicles with factory overload leaf springs, the StableLoads are the only suspension modification that quickly turn on and off based on your preference. If you use your vehicle as a daily driver, simply switch off the lower quick-disconnect StableLoads and enjoy its smooth factory ride.

b2ap3 thumbnail stableload display

StableLoads are also easy to install and most applications bolt on without any need for drilling. In the rare case your vehicle does not have the half-inch hole pre-drilled by the vehicle manufacturer, don’t stress. Our engineers have designed the StableLoad Drill Tool to help. Using specialty cobalt drill bits and a household cordless drill, each leaf spring can be drilled in less than 37 seconds. Learn about our complimentary drill tool rental program here. Call our Tech Support team at 800-246-8132 if you have questions about drilling overload leaf springs.

In conclusion, the results of the StableLoad Test provided significant insight as to how suspension upgrades can help your vehicle handle payload more effectively and reduce the top three stressors on your truck.

In comparison to airbags, the StableLoads performed 30 percent better when it comes to side-to-side sway, front-to-back motion or porpoising is reduced by 20 percent, and body roll showed 10 percent improvement.

By using the inclinometer to measure and analyze vehicle movement, science proves that suspension upgrades greatly impact vehicle handling.
