Hold Down Your Truck Camper with the Best!

"I had the Happijac turnbuckles, and bed tie downs. When I bought the Lance 1181, I converted to the Torklift frame mounts, and Torklift Derringers. I love them. Much quicker and easier to tie down. And, to me it feels more secure. The Torklift "no drill" frame mounts were true to their word, took me maybe 45 minutes to bolt all 4 frame mounts in, and much nicer setup in my opinion. The Happijacs were what I used for many years, but, with a heavier camper I really like the frame mounts."

How to Mount a Truck Camper Onto Your Truck

TCAlso known as a slide-in or cab-over camper, a truck camper is one of the best ways to go exploring where many others aren’t able to. If you’re new to truck camping, mounting it on your pickup truck might seem intimidating but is actually a simple process that can be done in five simple steps.

1.Raise the Truck Camper

TC2The first step is to raise the truck camper. Usually it is best to lift it until it is around 2 to 6-inches above the bed of your truck. It’s best to raise it in small increments of just a few inches at a time.

Also, make sure to raise the front of the camper first, and then raise the back to bring it level – if you raise the rear first, there is a chance that the camper could tip forward due to it having more weight in the front due to the weight of the overhang. Continue raising the camper until it is high enough for you to back your truck under it.

2. Back Your Truck Up

The next step is to back your truck up under the camper. You will want to make sure that the camper clears your truck's wheel wells and avoid contacting the truck camper jacks as you are backing up and are as close to center as possible.

3. Connect the Wiring

TC3Before your truck is completely backed into place beneath the camper, connect any wiring from the truck camper to the truck bed. It’s usually easier to connect the wiring before the camper is fully installed.

Once the wiring is complete, continue slowly backing your truck up until the camper is at the front of your truck bed or the shims. Make sure that the camper does not contact your truck's bumper or tail lights or else it could potentially cause damage. If you are concerned about the truck camper and truck touching, then a Camper Bumper Kit is the perfect addition to prevent damage. It’s also best to avoid dropping the camper on the wiring that has been plugged in, because that could also get damaged.

4. Lower the Truck Camper

Now that you have the truck camper over your truck, lower it down over your truck bed. Just as when you were lifting the camper - lower the back of the camper first, then the front. Work in increments of a few inches at a time until the camper is resting on your truck securely.

5. Secure the Camper

There are two major components to attaching your truck camper to the truck: tie downs and turnbuckles and we’ll go more in-depth about the best types of each below.

Attach the turnbuckles to the anchor points on the camper and the tie downs on your truck and tighten them. Turnbuckles are usually tightened to about 300 foot-pounds. Some turnbuckles have built-in indicators that can help you adjust them to the correct tension such as the FastGun turnbuckle. Be aware though, too much tension can damage tie-downs or rip out anchors on the camper, which can be expensive to fix. You can avoid this by using spring tension indicators and spring-loaded turnbuckles like the Torklift FastGuns.

Truck Camper Tie Downs

TC4Along with turnbuckles, tie downs are incredibly important when it comes to attaching a truck camper to your truck. There are two major kinds of tie downs available: bed-mounted and frame-mounted. We always recommend using frame-mounted tie downs because they use independent tie down points that bolt directly to the truck frame thus avoiding bed damage that is common with bed-mounted tie downs. Torklift tie downs use pre-existing bolt holes on the frame to avoid drilling.

If you’re concerned about road conditions and how they will affect your tie downs, we have a solution for you. The Talon tie down is made of aluminum and stainless steel and come with rust free corrosion protection for life. Manufactured to specifically fit your truck, Torklift Talon tie downs offer the best ride quality in the industry.

Truck Camper Turnbuckles

TC5

Just as there are different kinds of tie downs for truck campers, there are many different turnbuckles available as well. While each have their merits, there’s only one that stands above the rest when it comes to stability and safety. The FastGun turnbuckle is designed to connect and disconnect in seconds. The quick release handles allow for easy tool-free adjustment and tension indicators determine perfect tension every time.

As an additional benefit of Torklift tie downs and turnbuckles, Torklift warranties the truck frame and camper anchor points for the extent of the manufacturer warranty when our tie downs are used in conjunction with our fully spring-loaded turnbuckles.

There you have it - all five steps of mounting a truck camper. Pretty simple right? Also, as you continue to go camping in your truck camper, the mounting process will get easier and easier.

Over the Desert and Through the Snow, Here’s a Great Review from Anutami!

Nolans Epic Road TripsWe love hearing about Nolan's epic road trips with his family! If you’ve ever asked yourself: what do I need for my truck camper, then look no further than the FastGun turnbuckle, the best selling truck camper turnbuckles in the world. In the latest review of these turnbuckles, forum user Anutami, aka Nolan, discusses the epic trip that he took through the West during the holidays as well as his Torklift tie down and FastGun system. You won’t want to miss what he says below.

Ice Won’t Stop Nolan or Torklift International
Winter trip conditionsNolan had to deal with both desert and winter conditions during this tripTraveling for weeks with his family, Nolan went from warm Southern California to the cold Colorado Springs. “Funny how I always wear flip flips, but this trip I never even thought about them.” Getting to see beautiful scenery along the way, Nolan and his family went to the Mojave National Preserve, Las Vegas, Brian Head in Utah, Grand Junction and Manitou Springs in Colo.

During this entire trip, Nolan used the FastGun quick disconnect turnbuckles and Torklift frame mounted tie downs. Documented on Rv.net, Nolan states in his FastGun review that:

“I am really so glad I went with the Torklift system these last couple years, I always used the happijacs and wished I would have made the change sooner. It is so nice to be able to adjust the FastGuns on the fly, as the road conditions for us change frequently which require different tensions. Thanks Torklift!”

FastGuns In Ice
Look at how icy that FastGun is after
driving in winter conditions!

Nolans Christmas Present

to remove the ice from his FastGuns

We are so happy to hear that Nolan is enjoying his Torklift turnbuckles and tie downs and hopefully he used the mallet that we sent him a year ago to get all the ice off of the FastGuns! Designed to connect and disconnect in seconds, the FastGun turnbuckle installation is a breeze in a blizzard and is easy to uninstall them, de-ice them when required and then reinstall them.

Gear up for 2016 with truck camping necessities

Purchasing your first truck camper is exhilarating—there’s the anticipation of taking it on the road for the first time and the thought of spending long weekends in your new home away from home. It’s an exciting time in your life; however, preparing for a truck camper can also get a little overwhelming because it’s necessary to secure your truck camper before you can use it.

If you’re a truck camper newbie, we want to make life a little simpler for you by sharing a few tricks of the trade and by highlighting some of our favorite products to answer your questions about how best to hold down a truck camper.

The Three T’s: How to Successfully Secure Your Truck Camper
Those new to truck camping are often unclear about how to hold down a truck camper. Here, we list our “Three T’s” for doing just that. Keep these in mind as you’re preparing for your new addition.

truck camping necessities1Frame-mounting tie downs shown in yellow for contrast#1) Tie Downs
One of the first accessories you’ll need to purchase for your truck camper is truck camper tie downs. Tie downs are part of a system to secure the truck camper to its vehicle using either a frame-mounted or bed-mounted design. If you aren’t sure which to use, Torklift International recommends using frame-mounted tie downs as opposed to bed-mounted tie downs.

The benefits of attaching the tie down system to the frame of your truck:

• Dramatic improvement with vehicle handling
• Provides safety, security and stability while on the road
• Avoid bed and bumper damage: truck camping necessities2
• Maintain the value of your truck and prevent rust and bed damage by avoiding drilling into your truck bed or bumper

The truck bed is not a secure point for a tie down to attach. Using this method may result in paint damage and truck bed flexing and cracking. Vehicle manufacturers recommend that truck campers should be directly attached to the vehicle frame structure and that no additional holes be drilled through the vehicle frame. See the details here.

#2) Turnbuckles
Truck camper tie downs are important, but tie downs alone won’t secure your camper—you’ll also need a set of turnbuckles to complete the system. Now, you might be scratching your head and thinking to yourself—what in the world are turnbuckles? Don’t worry—it takes time to get used to the truck camping lingo. Turnbuckles, which can confusingly be referred to as tie downs as well, connect the truck camper to the truck and tie down system for maximum stability. There are many different designs of turnbuckles. Below we’ll highlight a few of these—like the FastGun Quick-Disconnect turnbuckle and the SpringLoad XL—to help you decide which turnbuckle is right for you. truck camping necessities3How to attach a truck camper to a truck

#3) Tension
Often, tension is a bad thing—if your spouse comes home from work and you ask how their day went and they answer, “Tense,”—you can almost guarantee that something unpleasant has happened and they may not be in a good mood. With truck camping, tension is actually a good thing—especially when it comes to turnbuckles. Camper manufacturers recommend that 300 truck camping necessities4Torklift's spring tension indicator makes adjusting turnbuckles easypounds of tension be applied to the turnbuckle in order to properly secure the camper. When you’re shopping for your new truck camping gear, don’t settle for any old camper turnbuckles—make sure to purchase spring-loaded turnbuckles. The spring system will help absorb shock you encounter with bumps along the road. It will also help protect the anchor points on your truck camper and tie down system.

Click here to learn how the spring tension indicator on Torklift’s truck camper turnbuckles make it extremely easy to achieve the perfect amount of tension every time.

Now that you know the Three T’s, it’s time to start looking for a solid turnbuckle.

The Famous FastGun: A Quick Disconnect, Spring-loaded Favorite
The Original FastGun turnbuckle is like the Olympic gold medalist of turnbuckles. It’s the #1 selling quick-disconnect turnbuckle in the world. FastGun turnbuckles require no tools; instead, they’re designed with a lever action handle that makes connecting or disconnecting a breeze. In fact, you can install a set of four in under four minutes. With the FastGun, installing turnbuckles or learning how to adjust turnbuckles couldn’t be easier.

truck camping necessities5FastGuns come in several finishesAll FastGun turnbuckles are made from high impact powder-coated stainless steel, and are available in long and short sizes to be compatible with both frame-mounted tie downs and bed-mounted tie down applications. Each FastGun comes in a set of two, and you can choose from a selection of high impact powder coated bright white, grey, black or stainless steel polished finishes. FastGun turnbuckles are backed by Torklift International’s legendary lifetime warranty and are proudly made in the USA.

truck camping necessities6Finally, FastGun turnbuckles are spring-loaded, and they come with our patented spring tension indicator or “o-ring”, which allows you to quickly determine whether or not you have applied the right amount of tension. They are also 100 percent lockable with the addition of FastGun locks. So go ahead and let the stress melt away—you can’t go wrong with the FastGun spring-loaded turnbuckles.

Additional Turnbuckles for Truck Campers
If the FastGun turnbuckle takes the Gold, the SpringLoad XL turnbuckle takes the Silver. The SpringLoad XL is designed specifically for frame-mounted tie downs. It’s made of aircraft grade aluminum and stainless steel and also comes in a set of two. Spring tension indicators ensure that tension has been properly applied. The SpringLoad XL is hand-tightened when installing or adjusting the turnbuckle, but it can be done in a matter of minutes. truck camping necessities7SpringLoad XL turnbuckle

truck camping necessities8Basic SpringLoad KitThe Basic SpringLoad turnbuckle is a basic chain turnbuckle application. It comes with two quick links, two heavy-duty forged steel turnbuckles and 24” of marine grade chain. The Basic SpringLoad also protects both the vehicle and the camper anchor points from damage.

Both the SpringLoad XL and the Basic SpringLoad are proudly made in the USA and backed by Torklift International’s legendary lifetime warranty.

Already have a set of camper turnbuckles? You can turn any set of camper turnbuckles—including the SpringLoad XL or Basic SpringLoad—into a quick-disconnect turnbuckle with the addition of a Derringer Handle.

Larry Csonka visits Torklift in Sumner, WA!

 csonka1
Larry Csonka and Torklift General Manager Jay Taylor

It’s not everyday an NFL legend stops by our manufacturing facility. When word spread through our offices that the one and only Larry Csonka would be paying us a visit, admittedly we were a bit star-struck.

Larry of course, was the star running back of the epic 1972 Miami Dolphins – the only NFL team in history to go undefeated in a season. So what brought Larry, “the Zonk” to Torklift?

csonka2
Larry taking a look at one of our assembly lines

Larry uses Torklift truck camper accessories on his rig. Specifically he secures his truck camper to his truck with our truck camper tie downs and FastGun truck camper turnbuckles. He was interested to see where the products are made at Torklift. He took a tour of our facility and made the day of every football fan on our team.

GlowStep-Revolution-RV-stepsGlowStep Revolution

Larry was nice enough to bring his truck along to help us with the development of a new fitment of our soon-to-be released for order GlowStep Revolution for truck campers.

GlowStep Revolution is currently available for pre-order for travel trailers and 5th wheel camper trailers.

As a much larger gentleman of gridiron glory, we explained to Larry that GlowStep Revolution is designed to eliminate the “diving board” effect of other RV scissor steps and RV flip up steps by creating a secure connection between the RV and the ground. For a guy Larry’s size that made a name for himself running over pro football players, the more stable his RV steps the better!

csonka3

Big thanks to "the Zonk” for making our day at Torklift. You can see what Larry is up to, from his incredible story as an NFL player to his outdoor adventures in Alaska on his official website here.

3 ways to protect turnbuckle finish and prevent corrosion

Torklift International turnbuckles are made from stainless steel. As a complex metal that has the strength of steel and the ability to reduce the rusting effects of iron, this is the strongest and best material for truck camper turnbuckles.

b2ap3_thumbnail_turnbuckles-torklift.png
Basic turnbuckles and polished FastGun turnbuckles

Stainless steel is used where both the properties of steel and resistance to corrosion are required. It’s well known for its ability to prevent corrosion and rust. Dirt, dust and grime, however, put stainless steel at risk. Luckily, stainless steel responds well to cleaning and never wears from excessive cleaning, as long as certain rules are followed.

Here are three simple cleansing techniques that we suggest for standard turnbuckle maintenance:

1. Water and a cloth
Routine cleaning can be accomplished with warm water and a cloth. This is the least risky option for cleansing stainless steel. Dry with a towel or cloth to prevent water spots and be sure to wipe in the direction of the polish lines.

2. Mild detergent, (dish washing liquid) and clothb2ap3_thumbnail_detergent.png
For cleaning that needs a bit more power, mild detergent and warm water is an effective solution to use without damaging the stainless steel. It’s important to thoroughly rinse the surface to prevent staining and spotting. Drying with a towel can prevent water spots caused by minerals in water.

3. Stainless steel cleanerb2ap3_thumbnail_cleaner.png
If you’ve experienced stains or scratches, or need to polish your stainless steel, a stainless steel cleaner is a good option. Some of these cleaners and polishes can help minimize scratching and remove stains. They also can polish stainless steel surfaces nicely. Read the directions on the stainless steel cleaner and test in an inconspicuous spot. Be sure to rinse thoroughly and towel dry.

Stainless steel does not stain, corrode or rust as easily as carbon steel, but it is not stain proof and requires regular up keep. All "stainless" steels can corrode under the wrong conditions. It’s best to avoid exposure to chlorides, as this has harsh effects on turnbuckles.

High quality finish makes a differenceb2ap3_thumbnail_fastgun_finishes.png
To further protect your turnbuckles, Torklift International offers stainless steel styles that are also finished with a high impact powder coat. The high impact powder coated turnbuckles require less maintenance as protection from rust and corrosion is greatly increased.

The FastGun turnbuckle is available in stainless steel polished, stainless steel high impact powder coated bright white, grey and black.

b2ap3_thumbnail_power-coating.pngTorklift International completes its automated 5-stage powder coating process in our manufacturing facility from start to finish. From our sandblasting, cleanse and hand-sprayed powder coating that adheres through electro static, this extensive process ensures the greatest quality and protection a finish can provide.

Click here to see why the most popular and best-selling turnbuckle is the Torklift International FastGun with quick-disconnect lever action handle.

To learn more about different styles of turnbuckles, read our detailed editorial on what type of turnbuckle you need to secure your camper.

Regular care and proper turnbuckle maintenance ensures your turnbuckles withstand any effects of corrosion or rust. If you have any additional questions in regards to Torklift International turnbuckles, feel free to contact our Tech Support at support@torklift.com or by calling 800-246-8132.

11 reasons why the FastGun turnbuckle is the No.1 turnbuckle in the world

If you are just getting started in the world of truck camping, you’ll be faced to make some decisions on how you want to go about hauling your new investment. Things you should consider are safety, stability and convenience so you can thoroughly enjoy the truck camping lifestyle.

b2ap3_thumbnail_BigRed_Blog.jpg

To hold down your camper, the type of tie down and turnbuckle you choose is important. If you are still considering what type of tie downs to use, make sure to read our editorial on how to prevent bed damage while hauling a truck camper. If you’ve selected a tie down system, what’s the next step in determining what you need to haul a truck camper?

Our 11 reasons why the FastGun turnbuckle is the number one selling turnbuckle in the world will provide some valuable insight.

Turnbuckles are critical in connecting your truck and truck camper to its tie down system. When it comes to turnbuckles, you might be wondering what design will work best for your application. The Torklift International FastGun turnbuckle is the best turnbuckle available.

Here’s why:

1) Installs in just 4 minutes
As the fastest turnbuckle application available, you will not find a more convenient turnbuckle on the market.  Other applications may require tools and adjustment, forcing you to spend up to 30 minutes to secure your camper. Once assembled, adjustment of the FastGuns only takes 4 minutes.

Take a look at how to install a camper turnbuckle in this quick video:

2) Quick-disconnect handle for ease of use
The disconnect feature of the Torklift International FastGun makes adjustment extraordinarily quick and easy. 5) Made in America from quality materials
The body of the turnbuckle is made from 100% stainless steel. The lever-action handle is made from aircraft grade aluminum. Due to the durability of these materials, each FastGun turnbuckle boasts a pull down rating of 2,500 pounds . With four of these turnbuckles securing your camper, you can be confident your camper is stable while on the road.

6) Multiple applications
Although Torklift recommends a frame-mounted tie down system to secure a truck camper, the FastGun turnbuckles can be used with both frame-mounted and bed-mounted tie down systems. Torklift does not make a bed-mounted tie down system but other brands do.

Long Range FastGuns are made for frame-mounted tie downs with a reach of 25 to 43 inches. These are also used for rear bumper mounted tie downs.

In order to prevent damage to the anchor points on your camper, the FastGun turnbuckles are spring-loaded to allow some give when your vehicle encounters uneven road conditions. Torklift strongly recommends using spring-loaded turnbuckles on all four points of the camper because the spring design acts as a shock absorber. This protects the tie down system and camper anchor points from damage.
