Torklift or HappiJac Tie Downs?

When getting ready to journey out with your truck camper, a thought that probably crosses your mind, “is my truck camper safe?” The way your truck camper is secured with tie downs and turnbuckles is essential for safety and stability while hauling. What brand of tie downs and turnbuckles are out there?

HappiJac Tie Downs - Starting at $284.80
HappiJac has designed a tie downs system by creating an I-beam truss structure that uses leverage to reduce the force on your truck, and control the truck camper movement. The front two anchor plates are drilled for installation at the front of the truck bed where the cab and bed meet.

 Turnbuckle Blog 1

The two rear anchor points are drilled onto the back bumper. The HappiJac tie down anchor points paired with their turnbuckles create a triangle leverage counter force to prevent side-to-side, front-to-back and up and down movement. By preventing this movement, it prevents the camper and truck from moving as a solid unit which can cause jolting to the truck bed and camper. This tie down system is covered by a one year warranty from purchase date.

Turnbuckle Blog 2Torklift Steel Frame-Mounted tie downs - Starting at $313.99
Torklift’s patented designed tie downs incorporate four tie down points that bolt directly to the truck’s frame. A system that bolts directly to the truck frame dramatically improves stability and handling. The tie downs are engineered to secure your truck camper to your truck with a tight fit and no loss of ground clearance.

The Frame-mounted tie down systems are designed to eliminate bed and bumper damage. When the steel frame-mounted tie downs are paired with any of our fully spring-loaded turnbuckles, we warranty the truck frame and camper anchor points for the extent of the manufacturers warranty. Because the turnbuckles are springloaded, it allows the truck and camper to move together as a solid unit which prevents jolting to the truck. Since the tie downs mount to the frame, there is no risk of tearing sheet metal on the bed or pulling down on the bumper. We have also designed a high-performance aluminum and stainless steel tie down called the Talon Camper Tie Downs that is constructed of 100% military grade aluminum and stainless steel that is rust free and corrosion protected for life.

Winterizing? Protect your tie down system over the off-season

“I’ve hauled worse than this,” you grunt as you press down on the gas pedal. To your right is your daughter. She is twenty years old, a pair of purple headphones occupies her ear canals and she is currently rolling her eyes with a loud sigh. Suddenly, she rips the headphones from her head and glares at you.

“The truck camper barely fits in back. I’m surprised they even got it in there,” she says.

“I know what I am doing,” you say. You believe the truck camper tie downs you fabricated are strong. You installed them yourself just a few years ago. They could survive an atom bomb, you assure yourself.

“It’ll hold.” You nod, confident that your tie downs can handle the weight and mass of the large truck camper. Prophetically, the camper unit shakes abruptly and slides back in the truck bed with these words. Slowly, your confidence erodes and is replaced with doubt, then fear.

“Please hold…” you mumble under your breath. Luckily for you, your daughter doesn’t hear this. She is too preoccupied with the sounds of a synthetic tune and lyrics shouted from three guys in skinny jeans. As you round a corner, you find yourself facing a hill beyond a set of red traffic lights. The road was wet, stained by the deluge of a thousand storms, but you know your truck can make the climb. The light turns green and you hit the gas.

hauling camperThen, it happens. You reach the top of the hill and the sound of grinding shakes you and your daughter to the core. The camper unit slides backward and a symphony of the camper crashing erupts behind you. Barreling onto its side is your truck camper, doing damage to not only the motorists behind you, but your wallet as well. Your truck is now dented from the failed tie downs and you can’t fathom the camper is even repairable.

“Told you,” she mutters, crossing her arms and shaking her head. As the rain begins to fall and bounce off of your windshield, you find your homemade, rusted tie downs newly freed from the unbearable weight of your precious cargo. You have allowed this damage to go unchecked for too long, and now your investment has been completely destroyed. All that work getting your rig and tie down application just right, gone to waste.

It didn’t have to be this way.

Tie down revival
By using Torklift International TRUE frame-mounted camper tie downs that bolt directly to the foundation of the truck, all of this mess could have been avoided. Not only are Torklift tie downs engineered to snuggly fit specific truck applications, the tie down system provides unparalleled strength and stability to support a large truck camper.

As you jump out of the truck and into the rain, you survey the damage and investigate what exactly caused the failure of the homemade camper tie downs you worked so tirelessly on fabricating. It’s obvious that there were several flaws in the design of the failed camper tie down system and the rusty mess that played a part in the epic defeat you’ve just experienced.

What’s the price of peace of mind and your family’s safety?

“That’s it,” you say out loud. “I’m getting Torklifts.”

tie-downsWith Torklift Tie Downs you know you’re investing in quality you can trust:

• Best ride quality in the industry
• Connection to the truck foundation through four individual tie down points
• Fast, no-drill installations - Don’t drill into the truck and compromise its integrity, diminishing the value and potentially voiding its warranty
• Legendary Lifetime Warranty
• Proudly made in the USA

In starting over, it’s clear that you want to protect your new Torklift frame-mounted tie downs. With nasty road conditions and a rough winter ahead, you flashback to the vision of your rusted tie downs and it’s easy to make the decision on using a Torklift International Tie Down Finishing Kit.

reminderDon’t forget the Finishing KitOne last detail
When it comes to truck camper tie downs, there is nothing more brutal and unforgiving as the forces of nature and the sands of time itself. The Finishing Kit uses special protective foam inserts and caps to prevent water and debris from entering your tie down tubes. This protective measure allows you to minimize any damage the environment can cause. Helping to prevent rusted tie downs and tie down water damage is a full-time job, but luckily the Tie Down Finishing Kit is a perfect candidate that takes care of business. Apply it to either Torklift International True Frame-Mounted Tie Downs or Talon Tie Downs.

capping-kitVinyl plug on finishing kit

Whether your Torklift Tie Downs are forged from steel or crafted from high performance military grade aluminum like the Talons, the Tie Down Finishing Kit keeps the combined forces of Mother Nature and Father Time at bay.

Installation is made easy with 3 steps:

1. Simply remove the tie down inserts

tie-down-capping-kitTie Down Finishing Kit
(back and front side)
2. Locate the back end of the tie down tube. Place the protective foam plug into this tube opening. If you have trouble finding the opening, you can use the outside opening and push the foam plug all the way through the tube so it blocks the backside. *This may depend on the tie down design, which varies with part number.

3. Use the vinyl caps to cover the outer end of the tube opening. Since Torklift Tie Downs do not affect ground clearance, your tie down system is completely hidden from view when the tie down inserts are removed.

finishing-kitProtect your tie down system
from water and debris
If you’re removing the truck camper and winterizing for the off-season, the Tie Down Finishing Kit is a simple but critical measure in maintaining your tie down system. Keeping them protected over the winter months will ensure they remain in excellent condition come camping season next year.

Torklift International Tie Down Finishing Kit is sold in a set of four. Talon aluminum tie downs come standard with the Finishing Kit included (2 per set of 2 Talons).

Torklift founder Jon Kay celebrates his 75th birthday today

torklift story

Torklift International began nearly 40 years ago under the guidance and expertise of Jon Kay. He started Torklift with the goal of providing careful and attentive customer service and innovative fabrication services.

It began with ONE MAN.

1958
The Torklift story starts in 1958 when Jon Kay began working at a hitch and tow shop in Tacoma, Washington. Through his experience, he decided he wanted to open his own shop someday.

1976
After several years of planning and accumulating equipment, he opens his own shop in Kent, Washington: Torklift Central Welding. Upon opening the doors for business, he begins fabricating his own line of products.

1981
Torklift Central Welding grows in success, doubling in size with the addition of two bays.

1988 - 1992
The expansion continues with the purchase of additional buildings and the demolition of the original building to make way for a larger shop.

1990
True Frame-Mounted Tie Downs are invented. They are the first product manufactured by Torklift and the first of their kind in the world.

1995
Torklift Central Welding purchases their first CNC plasma cutter. Jon Kay still continues to develop innovative products at Torklift International to this day.

1999
Torklift International is born. While Torklift Central Welding is still around today, they continue to conduct business as a separate company. Torklift International manufactures parts that are sold all over the world. But it all began with Jon Kay’s dream to open a small hitch and tow shop.

1999
Torklift International ships their first SuperHitch and SuperTruss.

2003
The FastGun Turnbuckle is invented. It is the first turnbuckle of its kind with a quick-disconnect handle.

2004
Torklift International purchases their first dual-head, high def. CNC plasma.

2008
The SuperHitch line expands to include the SuperHitch Magnum.

They maintain their commitment to customer service by being available 24 hours a day and living up to their Legendary Lifetime Warranty. Total operating space of Torklift is more than 75,000 square feet between the original location in Kent, Wash., and the latest location in Sumner, Wash. Ken and the newest member of his family: Part 2

In this series we are highlighting Ken Pastorius and his adventures through the manufacturing of his truck, the creation of the tie downs for his new truck and his experience with installing and using them. You can check out Part 1 here where Ken got to see his truck built at the GM Factory. In Part 2 of 3, we will focus on the production of Ken’s 2016 Torklift Talon Tie Downs.

Below are some awesome production photos of the Talon Tie Downs courtesy of Truck Camper Magazine along with the packaging of his FastGuns and Ken’s reaction toreceiving all of his goodies.

One of the things that is so grand about Ken and his story is that he is receiving the very first Talon Tie Downs made for 2016. Yes, I repeat: the very first Talon Tie Downs of 2016. They are also the first product of our 40th anniversary year and we couldn’t be any prouder of them.

IMG 2763Wrapping Ken's FastGuns with love IMG 2764The FastGuns are wrapped nice and tight

“I'm very grateful to Torklift Manufacturing for providing these products and everything else you have done for us over the past several years. You've proved to be an amazing company with products that truly provide a great service for RV enthusiast.”
                  – Ken Pastorius

In the photos above you see us packaging Ken’s white FastGun turnbuckles. They are the number one selling quick disconnect camper turnbuckle in the world and are 100% lockable and tool free, making them incredibly easy to use and safe from potential theft. Another great thing about our FastGun turnbuckles is that they are made from high impact powder-coat stainless steel making them more resistant to diminished quality when it comes to impact, moisture, light, chemicals and weather conditions.

At Torklift, we go through stringent checks to make sure that every part is made correctly and that what we are shipping out is of the highest quality. Once everything was thoroughly checked and packaged, it was time to send Ken the new toys for his truck… but with a funny twist.

image1Ken got his new Torklift gear!

image2Did he really order a box of hamsters?

"I can't tell you how excited I was to come home and find my Torklift order sitting in the garage. Donna said I reminded her of a kid on Christmas morning. But upon closer inspection, I was a little concerned I may not have gotten the items I ordered and then we both laughed.”

No, Ken didn’t order large boxes of hamsters or dog bones or kidneys, but we are glad that Ken and his wife had a good chuckle about it.

Below is more information on the Talon Tie Downs that Ken received:

• Rust free corrosion protection for life
• Finishing Kit included
• Available for best-selling applications
• Tie down receiver tube and tie down insert are each 100% military grade aluminum
• Ultra-light weight
• Fast, no-drill installations
• No loss of ground clearance
• Hidden when not in use
• Best ride quality in the industry
• Legendary Lifetime Warranty
• Proudly made in the USA

Make sure you stay tuned, part three of his adventures will be out soon which include feedback on his experience with the Torklift products.

Feel free to contact us if you have any questions about the FastGuns and Talon Tie Downs or where to purchase them.

Ken and the newest member of his family: Part 1

We here at Torklift International love our customers and like to share their latest news and achievements. In this series we would like to highlight Ken Pastorius and his adventures through the manufacturing of his truck, the creation of the tie downs for his new truck and his experience with installing and using them. In Part 1 of 3, we will focus on the production of Ken’s 2015 GMC Denali 3500 DRW.

GM Factory GMC Truck Assembly Factory in Flint, MI In Ken’s own words, “the opportunity we were given to visit the GM Flint Truck Assembly Plant and watch our truck get built was a very unique and once in a lifetime experience.” What started as an inquiry on RV.net asking about the compatibility between the Arctic Fox 1150 Truck Camper with the 2015 GMC Denali DRW turned into an invitation from General Motors to tour the plant where their truck was being assembled in Flint, Michigan.

Below are some of the photos that Ken took and shared with us while he and his wife were at the plant watching their ‘baby’ get assembled.

Bed of Truck Box of the truckFrame of Truck Cab of the truck

Over 40 years ago, Ken used to work on an assembly line in a different truck manufacturing plant and noticed a night and day difference between then and now. When talking about the quality of people working on the GM assembly line, Ken stated “there is no more prying or banging on something to fit. No more having to lift a heavy part into position. It was more like a precision partnership between man and technology.”

New Pastorius Truck New truck for the Pastorius Family!

Ken is not kidding when he said, “she may purr like a kitten but don't be fooled, she is a beast with the heart of a lion.” That isone beautiful truck that will be great for camping and adventuring! “Now, the only thing left to do, is to get her all accessorized in Torklift products and the two of them will be ready for their first adventure, together.”

2015 Denali with Arctic Fox 2015 Denali with Arctic Fox Two weeks later the new truck is safe at home and excitement is building! Larry Csonka visits Torklift in Sumner, WA!

 csonka1
Larry Csonka and Torklift General Manager Jay Taylor

It’s not everyday an NFL legend stops by our manufacturing facility. When word spread through our offices that the one and only Larry Csonka would be paying us a visit, admittedly we were a bit star-struck.

Larry of course, was the star running back of the epic 1972 Miami Dolphins – the only NFL team in history to go undefeated in a season. So what brought Larry, “the Zonk” to Torklift?

csonka2
Larry taking a look at one of our assembly lines

Larry uses Torklift truck camper accessories on his rig. Specifically he secures his truck camper to his truck with our truck camper tie downs and FastGun truck camper turnbuckles. He was interested to see where the products are made at Torklift. He took a tour of our facility and made the day of every football fan on our team.

GlowStep-Revolution-RV-stepsGlowStep Revolution

Larry was nice enough to bring his truck along to help us with the development of a new fitment of our soon-to-be released for order GlowStep Revolution for truck campers.

GlowStep Revolution is currently available for pre-order for travel trailers and 5th wheel camper trailers.

As a much larger gentleman of gridiron glory, we explained to Larry that GlowStep Revolution is designed to eliminate the “diving board” effect of other RV scissor steps and RV flip up steps by creating a secure connection between the RV and the ground. For a guy Larry’s size that made a name for himself running over pro football players, the more stable his RV steps the better!

csonka3

Big thanks to "the Zonk” for making our day at Torklift. You can see what Larry is up to, from his incredible story as an NFL player to his outdoor adventures in Alaska on his official website here.

DIY turnbuckle: How to make a FastGun

b2ap3_thumbnail_Derringerhandle.jpgDerringer handles for quick-disconnect capabilityThe FastGun turnbuckle is the most popular truck camper turnbuckle for several reasons. It’s tool-free, lockable, easy to adjust and snaps into place with the perfect amount of tension every time. With this simple trick, achieve the quick-disconnect capability and convenience of a FastGun turnbuckle with any basic hardware turnbuckle.

b2ap3_thumbnail_fastgun.pngFastGun turnbuckle

Solution: Derringer Handle
Transform old-fashion turnbuckles by adding a Derringer Handle to a basic turnbuckle chain system, standard chainless turnbuckles and even shorter length turnbuckles for bed-mounted applications. This allows for the lever action and ease of use that Torklift International FastGun turnbuckles provide. The Derringer Handle is applicable to chain systems, threaded rods and other rigging configurations.

#1) Basic chain system
If you are currently using Torklift’s Basic SpringLoad Kit or a similar design, the Derringer Handle is attached with minimal effort.

  1. Locate the drop forged steel and hot dipped galvanized eyebolts that come with each Derringer Handle
  2. Attach the eyebolts to each Derringer Handle by tightening it with a washer and lock nut combination (see instructions for eyebolt assembly)
  3. Use the hook-to-hook turnbuckle and attach through the bottom of Derringer Handle
  4. Secure hook bolt on Derringer Handle to the camper anchor point and tighten turnbuckles accordingly

#2) Threaded rod
If you are currently using a SpringLoad XL, AnchorGuard turnbuckle or a similar design with a 1/2 inch threaded rod, the Derringer Handle is attached in two ways. Either use the eyebolt configuration as described above by hanging each turnbuckle hook bolt through the eyebolts, or create one turnbuckle unit by fastening the Derringer Handle onto a 1/2 inch threaded rod.  To achieve a turnbuckle design similar to the Torklift FastGun, Torklift suggests this method of permanently bolting the Derringer Handle to the rod, creating one unit.

Attach a Derringer Handle to a 1/2 inch threaded rod using the following steps:

  1. To hold the rod in place, use a wrench to tighten a jam nut to the body of the turnbuckle
  2. Where the threading starts, use a hacksaw and cut the rod. Bevel the top of the rod at 45 degrees using a sander, grinder or file -- Bonus Tip: Apply a small amount of paint to the newly cut end of the threaded rod to prevent corrosion
  3. Add a turnbuckle jam nut and adjust 5 inches from the top of the newly cut rod
  4. Open the Derringer Handle and insert the threaded rod through the hole in the bottom of the Derringer Handle, screw on dimple nut and tighten down
  5. Adjust threaded rod so 1/8 inch protrudes from the top of the dimple nut
  6. Pull the rod down until the nut is snug to the bottom of the handle
  7. Tighten the original jam nut (the one 5 inches down) to the bottom of the Derringer Handle

How do I prevent bed damage when hauling a truck camper?

One of the best aspects of truck camping is being able to camp and explore just about anywhere. To travel without limitations, prepare your truck and camper with the ability to safely maneuver a variety of elements. Tight turns, narrow roads and adverse weather conditions can become dangerous if your camper is not secured safely.

In order to achieve the safest set up and prevent camper movement, the truck and camper must become one unit. How can you attach the camper to your truck without causing any damage to the truck bed? Let’s discover what options are currently available for securing truck campers.

While shopping for a tie down system, you’ll find a few different methods of securing a camper to your vehicle. There are designs that attach to the truck bed or bumper, and there are Torklift Tie Downs that attach directly to the frame of the truck. Let’s talk about the options.

1. Stake Pocket Tie Downs
Stake pocket camper mounts bolt in the truck bed stake pocket and use a wing-like plate that extends from the bed. This connects the turnbuckle to the camper eyebolts.

2. Bed-mounted Tie Downs
This style of bed-mounted tie downs advertised as “direct to frame” attaches by an anchor plate on the front side of the truck bed with rear anchors on the truck bumper. Although there are small metal parts with this type of tie down that come into contact with the trucks heavy-duty frame, the contact is incidental and lends negligible support as the primary strength. The support for this type of tie down is the truck bed and rear bumper and not the truck’s frame.

Negative side effects from bed-mounted designs are lack of support and potential for damage to your truck bed. Designs that attach to the truck bed may also require intentional drilling of the truck bed or bumper, causing permanent damage to your truck.

It is important to recognize that pickup trucks are now built from thinner metals and truck campers are increasing in size. A tie down system that attaches directly to the truck frame is now a necessity.

Several years ago, nationally known RV enthusiast Brian Brawdy was sponsored by a company that recommended and installed these bed-mounted tie downs. Torklift International approached him to talk about our frame-mounted tie downs. Upon discussion we pointed out massive cracks that occurred underneath his truck bed on the bed frame, which was essentially causing the truck bed to come apart. Not only did we help repair thousands of dollars in damages to his truck, but also outfitted him with Torklift International products.  Brian no longer has to worry about damage to his truck and has been satisfied with Torklift products ever since.

3. Frame-mounted Tie Downs
The safest and best way to secure your camper is with the Torklift International TRUE frame-mounted tie downs. The frame-mounted design fits to specific vehicle makes/models allowing strongest possible attachment to the trucks frame. The truck’s heavy-duty frame acts like a foundation for a house providing all of the strength and stability for the entire truck. By using a tie down design that is 100% supported by the truck’s frame it eliminates any chances of bed and bumper damage.

Torklift International’s frame-mounted tie down system:
      -  Incorporates four independent tie down points for dramatically improved stability
      -  Bolts directly onto the truck frame (most applications don’t require drilling)
      -  Provides zero loss of ground clearance
      -  Minimizes visibility of the system when the tie down inserts are removed

As an industry first, Torklift recently unveiled the precision crafted aluminum Talon Tie Downs. They are made from 100% lightweight military grade aluminum alloy making them up to 50% lighter than steel applications while designed to be stronger. The Talons come with rust free corrosion protection.

Torklift Tie Downs have a lifetime warranty. When Torklift Tie Downs are used with our spring-loaded turnbuckles, we extend the lifetime warranty to the truck frame and camper anchor points for the extent of its manufacturer’s warranty. Call 800.246.8132 for warranty details.

Torklift International Tie Downs are the only tie downs that truly attach to the strongest part of your truck: the truck frame. All others are bed-mounted. There is no longer a need to sacrifice damaging your truck to enjoy a safe and worry-free vacation with your truck camper.
