Over 40 Years of Innovation, Quality, Safety

Bob loves his new GlowStep Revolution trailer steps!

IMG 0104There’s nothing more satisfying than knowing a customer is completely happy with a product and that it’s making their lives better and easier. At Torklift, we’re dedicated to making your RVing and camping experience amazing, and Bob is no exception! Recently, we worked with Bob Vaughn who wanted to upgrade his steps, but didn’t want to go with a ladder or drawbridge-style step that allows mud, water, sand and other debris to get inside his RV. Bob chose to install the GlowStep Revolution trailer steps and had this to say:

“I received my Torklift steps the other day and installed them. They are truly awesome. My old steps were 3 steps and it was a chore to get in and out of my 5th wheel. These are 4 steps and what a difference. I have an artificial knee on my left leg and an artificial hip joint on my right leg and these steps make getting in and out a breeze.”

-Bob Vaughn, RV.net

Upgrading factory steps
IMG 0105GlowStep Revolution trailer steps are designed to store inside the existing factory compartment underneath your doorway. As you can see to the left and above, Bob’s factory steps hang well below his trailer when stored and don’t reach the ground once deployed. Once installed, the GlowStep Revolution reaches the ground with its All Terrain Landing Gear and improves ground clearance when the steps are stored. Similar to the staircase found in your home, the GlowStep Revolution entry step system also has the shortest riser height in the industry at only 7.5 inches.

These trailer steps also require minimal effort and space to deploy, so no matter where you’re parked, you will be able to use your GlowStep Revolution steps. One of the most prevalent issues that are common with aftermarket RV steps is that they are designed to install within the doorway and have to be lowered down from overhead. That means you have to stand underneath it to lower them down, and also have a certain amount of room next to your RV in order to deploy these steps. This could be very inconvenient in many circumstances including storage facilities, RV shop repair bays, stopping at gas stations and tight camping spots.

Features of the GlowStep Revolution steps:

Edited2• Only RV step system with 7 inches of vertical step elevation adjustment
• Unparalleled stability eliminating the unsafe diving board effect
• Earth to RV: Brings step to ground level (No more unsafe booster step)
• Landing gear quickly levels on uneven terrain (included)
• Step system accessories: Handrail, pet safety barriers and shoe cleaning attachment
• Made from lightweight aircraft grade aluminum (rust free)
• Direct bolt-on installation easily replaces your factory step system
• Bushing bearing bolted for maximum stability and longevity – also provides smooth operation when deploying or retracting steps to prevent binding and grinding common with factory steps
• Glows in the dark for up to 10 hours with only five minutes of light exposure
• Secures into place via locking mechanism
• Legendary Lifetime Warranty
• Proudly made in the USA

All Terrain Landing Gear
One thing that Bob mentioned was that because of his artificial knee and hip joints, getting in and out of the 5th wheel trailer was a chore due to its step instability. With the All Terrain Landing Gear adjustable feet, the GlowStep Revolution RV steps connect firmly to ground level and eliminate the unsafe diving board feeling associated with factory trailer steps.

IMG 0178“They are solid as a rock with no jiggling or bounce. They are adjustable at the top and on the bottom also. Our dogs did not like our old steps, but with these they just go right up in the camper… This is undoubtedly the best mod I have ever done to my 5th wheel. I am truly impressed…”

 - Bob Vaughn, RV.net

The All Terrain Landing Gear come standard with the GlowStep Revolution but aren’t the only additional features available for this step system. There are also accessories that make a complete system that includes safety support and cleaning for your steps. There is the GlowGuide Handrail to make getting in and out of your RV easier and safer, the SafeStep barrier for pet friendly steps and DirtDestroyer which is a shoe cleaning attachment to prevent debris from coming into the RV.

Maintaining and Understanding Your RV Batteries

RV battery BoxFor those who enjoy boondocking or bringing amenities and the comfort of home such as hair dryers, laptops and more – you’re going to need power. What’s the best way to get power through your RV? Batteries! Now as RVs are getting more technologically advanced, RV batteries are a necessity, but how well do you understand the batteries for your RV?

The basics of understanding your RV battery

At their most basic level, a RV deep cycle battery is lead acid, which means they have several cells connected in a series. Each cell produces volts which is where you get the power from. There are three major kinds of deep cell batteries for RVs available that are made out of plates and electrolytes composed of sulfuric acid, lead and water: AGM, flooded wet cell and gel cell. Each RV battery has both its advantages and disadvantages:

Flooded wet cell battery: available in 6-volt or 12-volt variations, flooded wet cell batteries are the most common RV batteries and are very affordable.

How it works: Flooded wet cell batteries vent oxygen and hydrogen gas while charging, the gases are produced from the electrolysis of water. It requires distilled water to be added and has to be in a ventilated area due to the gases.

RV Battery AGM battery: variation of a lead-acid battery that has advantages over a flooded wet cell battery including a spill-proof design, faster charging time and a longer life.

o How it works: AGM batteries have a fiberglass mat between the plates to absorb the electrolytes while charging and can be mounted in any position. They are more expensive and require a compatible battery charger.

Gel cell battery: Does not contain liquid and is therefore leak proof. It also has a high performance at many different temperatures.

o How it works: Unlike the other two batteries, the sulfuric acid in gel cell batteries is mixed with a thickening agent and forms a gel-like substance. They charge at a slower rate and are more expensive as well.

The life expectancy of RV batteries will depend on how you use them, how well they’re maintained, how they’re charged/discharged and stored. The average time of usable power for deep-cycle batteries is 20 hours but the greater the amp-hour rating, the greater the battery storage capacity. There are many sizes available, but the most common are group 24, 27 and 31.

Battery Diagram

Maintaining RV batteries

Exploded BatteryThe two most common causes for RV battery failure are overcharging and undercharging which can lead to sulfation, which is the formation of sulfate crystals that corrode battery parts. Undercharging is a result of batteries being repeatedly discharged and not fully recharged between cycles. Overcharging is when there is a severe loss of water and plate corrosion and causes overheating and loss of water. Luckily – both of these events are avoidable. Some maintenance tips include:

Checking the batteries once a month to see how they look and refilling the water if needed
Cleaning the batteries to remove corrosion (usually with a stiff wire brush or toothbrush)
Use battery sealant spray to prevent further or future corrosion

RV battery storage

PowerArmor SolarOne of the best ways to help maintain your RV battery is to make sure they’re stored properly, fully charged in an enclosed and well-ventilated area. Current trailer steps a problem? Upgrade today and save!

RV Steps 3At Torklift, our foremost priority is making life easier for RVers – especially when it comes to trailer steps! This especially includes those who have current factory or other aftermarket steps or stools that aren’t working. Just like the photo shown on the right, this drawbridge-style step that allows mud, water and other debris to get inside the RV. Also, due to the height of the RV, the steps aren’t able to reach the ground and provide a solid platform! You shouldn’t have to carry around extra wood, stools or ladders to stabilize your steps.

Make your RV experience even better

IMG 1807Instead of having to settle for steps that are less than extraordinary, why not upgrade to the GlowStep Revolution? Although there are many new kinds of steps for trailers on the market that are an alternate to current factory designs, they do have their disadvantages. One of the most common issues that we see with these new steps is that they are designed to install within the RV doorway and have to be manually lowered down from overhead. They require modification and drilling into your doorway which could potentially cause warping and damage after much use. That also means that you have to stand underneath these steps to lower them as well as have a certain amount of clearance next to your RV in order to deploy these steps. This could be very inconvenient in many circumstances such as storage facilities, stopping at gas stations and tight camping spots.

GlowStep RevolutionClearance is not an issue with the GlowStep Revolution

The GlowStep Revolution trailer steps on the other hand, are designed to store inside the existing factory compartment underneath your doorway. Similar to the staircase found in your home, the GlowStep Revolution entry step system also has the shortest riser height in the industry at only 7.5-inches.

Accessories and more!

Everything you need to know about RV shore power cords!

Fortress PowerLock Blog 1Whether you’re new to RVing or a seasoned camper, you should know that RVs require power to run their various appliances and systems. Your rig is powered by either its 12-volt systems, also known as batteries, or by being plugged into a 120-volt power source through an RV power cord, also known as shore power. Shore power requires connecting your rig to an outside power source, either a power outlet or a generator.

Power connections at campgrounds are not all alike. They come with a variety of sizes and shapes of power cords. Different power cords mean different amps, and you have to use the appropriate power source for your rig. Your RV either requires a 30-amp or 50-amp plug to connect to a 120-volt power source at the campground.

Fortress PowerLock Blog 2There are items in your RV that won't work unless you are connected to an external power source providing 120-volts. This includes your household outlets, air conditioner, TV and microwave. Usually, these appliances cannot be powered from batteries unless your RV has an inverter to convert DC power into AC power. DC (direct current) power will only send the electric charge in one direction as compared to AC (alternating current) power which changes direction periodically. Getting power from a 120-volt source to your RV is a big deal because some appliances will only work with 120-volt sources. You need to have the right RV power cord for your rig and it needs to be high quality. This is one place you don't want to pinch pennies.
Example of a 30-amp plug

Fortress PowerLock Blog 3Because your RV manufacturer has provided a high-quality power cord, you don’t want there to be any chance of it getting stolen because of the copper that’s inside the cord. It could not only mean you have to replace your cord, but it could also cost you hundreds of dollars to fix a damaged camper outlet. The Fortress PowerLock is designed to cover your shore power cord access door to protect your RV power cords from being cut and stolen. It’s the only lock available specifically designed for shore power cords in the industry.

Features of the Fortress PowerLock include:

Lock covers shore power cord access door to protect RV power cords from being cut and stolen
Prevents theft associated with opening access door and removing power cords
Easy installation
Lock and keys included
Available in black or white high impact powder coat aircraft grade aluminum
Legendary Lifetime Warranty
Proudly made in the USA

Trailer step proximity a problem? We have a solution!

Bill C Blog 1At Torklift, our main priority is making life easier for campers – and when it comes to trailer steps, there’s no exception! Recently, we worked with a customer who wanted to upgrade their steps, but didn’t want to go with a ladder or drawbridge-style step that allows mud, water, sand and other debris to get inside the RV. He also didn’t want to stay with his factory RV steps due to their instability. Instead, Bill chose to install the GlowStep Revolution:

“Your steps are awesome. They indeed do everything I expected… they solve every problem that most steps have. They contact the ground, so they are stable. They are not inside the trailer like the MORRyde ones, which have to be deployed perfectly… I love these steps.”

Problems stopping when towing heavy loads? Here’s your solution

Byers F350 Adventurer89RBS TorkliftSystem 6.27.17When it comes to towing behind your truck, many people think that as long as you attach a ballmount to a hitch on a vehicle, you’re set to haul anything and everything. While we’ve covered the basics before in another blog, How to Tow a Trailer, there’s one major aspect we didn’t mention when it comes to towing safely behind your truck and what towing does to your truck and trailer suspension.

In particular, how to deal with problems stopping when towing heavy loads, especially when your truck is squatting too much. We covered that your hitch needs to be the correct class and that your vehicle is capable of carrying the load, and while that’s all true - is your truck suspension also up to the task? If not, you could have major issues with stopping as well as handling complications such as swaying, porpoising and sag.

b2ap3 thumbnail trucksagIf your trailer has too much weight, it can make your truck sag while towing!

TLI SL Blog 4

There are a wide variety of suspension improvements, but which one is the best one? Here’s a short list of some of the most common suspension kits available:

Shocks: A mechanical or hydraulic device designed to absorb and dampen shock impulses. Some types even allow you to tune the ride by control of the valve, but can be quite pricey and maintenance can be expensive.
Airbags: One of the most common suspension upgrades, but that’s not necessarily a good thing. It’s expensive not only to purchase airbags, but also have them installed and repaired as well. They are very capable of lifting a vehicle for towing to prevent sag, but are notorious for leaks. They also cause a destabilizing effect by lifting a majority of weight off the vehicle suspension.
Bump stops: A simple design, bump stops are meant to be installed to prevent metal on metal contact. As the suspension undergoes high-compression such as turning a corner or hitting a speed bump, they soak up the shock. They can force your shocks to work harder because they don’t engage as quickly with the bump stops installed.TLI SL Blog 6
Sway bars: Another common suspension upgrade, sway bars help reduce the body roll that comes with towing heavy loads and can improve cornering. But, over time the sway bars can cause cracked mounts and also stiffen your ride which can make long trips uncomfortable.

With lack of control when stopping, you’ll find yourself gripping your steering wheel. The key to getting the stability you need is figuring out the best way on how to improve suspension and taking the steps to making your towing experience safer. There are many ways to upgrade suspension, but are the ones listed above the best suspension upgrades? We would argue no, but what else can you do to improve your ride while you’re towing without having to spend thousands on truck and trailer supplies?

Torklift introduces the StableLoad suspension enhancement. A StableLoad improves the vehicle’s handling by pre-activating the stabilizing effect that was designed for rear suspension. This keeps the vehicle manufacturer’s factory installed overload leaf springs under load the way the manufacturer’s designed them to function. The quad contact design compliments the specific vehicle engineered suspension that manufacturers invested millions of dollars developing. Since the lower StableLoad turns on and off, you get a smooth and comfortable ride even with the product activated for towing.

StableLoad Science

TLI SL Blog 7With the StableLoads, see and feel a dramatic reduction in side-to-side sway, body roll while you’re towing and when your trailer brakes. The StableLoads keep your vehicle level reducing stopping distance, suspension wear and tire wear. Another unique feature of the StableLoad is that it can be turned on and off depending on whether you’re towing or not. This means that you can return to your normal factory suspension when you’re not towing behind your truck.

Torklift also provides a 30-day money back guarantee on these suspension wedges no matter where they were purchased. If you are not satisfied with your StableLoads in the first 30 days, with a receipt a refund up to minimum resale price will be given. This is in place to ensure you are happy with your purchase.

If you have any questions about the StableLoad towing suspension product, visit our StableLoad page here or feel free to contact us at 800-246-8132. You can also email our tech support directly at support@torklift.com. If you are tired of problems stopping when towing, you can also purchase the StableLoads from a Torklift Certified Dealer near you by visiting our Where to Buy page.

How to repair a shore power cord

Shore-Power-Repair-1

Shore Power Repair Blog 1

Being able to power your RV while traveling is essential. If your shore power cord is damaged or you are a victim of power cord theft, you have options as far as what kind of replacement cord you can purchase. There are two different styles of shore cords and depending on your RV, it may require a small or larger number of amps to power it.

How do I determine what style or how many amps I will need?

Amp ratings

There are two different amp rating shore cords available. What do the amps mean? Here’s an example: If you have a 30-amp rig, you can run one air conditioner and a few other appliances at the same time but not much else. If you have a 50-amp RV plug, then you can plug in and run almost every appliance in your rig at the same time. More amps means more power.

Option one: 30-amp cord that can provide power for a smaller to average sized RV (three prongs)
Option two: 50-amp cord that can provide power for an average to larger sized RV (four prongs)

Different Styles Available

There are two different styles that are available for replacement cords:

Option one- A detachable cord that is plugged into both the RV and outlet which allows you to easily detach and secure the cord. This type of shore cord can easily be replaced and stored in the RV when not in use. If stolen or damaged, it can possibly be expensive to replace, but it’s the only thing that would need to be replaced.

Shore Power Repair Blog 2Example of a 30-amp external cord

Option two- this cord is wired directly to the junction box (and probably already came standard on your RV), which is your RV’s power wiring box. In older RVs the cord is bunched into a small compartment while newer RVs now offer a retractable cord roller for easy storage. If this cord is stolen or damaged, you will have to rewire this shore cord back into the junction box. It could cost you a few hundred dollars to repair the damage and replace the cord.

Shore Power Repair 6Example of a 30-amp cord that is wired to your RV

Each amp rating can be found in both of the cord styles, so it comes down to what is going to meet your needs the best. Now you’ve determined the best shore cord to fit your needs and installed it on your trailer, how are you going to protect it from theft?

The Fortress PowerLock

Shore Power Repair Blog 4Torklift has designed a shore power cord cover called the Fortress PowerLock, to protect the RV power cord from being cut or stolen. This is the only lock available for shore power cords in the industry.  Crafted out of aircraft grade aluminum, the locking shore power hatch is available in a white or black high impact powder coating. This product, like many other Torklift products, comes with a Legendary Lifetime Warranty. The Fortress PowerLock is easy to install and has a lock with a set of keys included.

How do I install the Fortress PowerLock?

Designed for easy installation, the Fortress PowerLock only takes minutes to give you peace of mind when it comes to your shore power. For installation instructions, visit our recent blog on how to install this RV electrical hatch.

If you have any questions on how the Fortress PowerLock protects your shore power cord, are interested in purchasing or need more information, contact our tech support at 800.246.8132.

Protect Your RV Investments This Winter!

Protect_Your_RV_Blog_1

RVDaily OCT

As camping season is coming to a close and you are thinking of going south for the winter or storing your RV, do you have proper security and storage options during the winter? At Torklift, we always believe that it’s better to be prepared than to have to deal with hundreds of dollars in repairs and replacement when spring comes around. Three things to consider when storing your RV are: do I have proper locks for my propane tanks, how protected is my shore power cord and do I have a spare battery that is stored safely throughout the winter?

The Fortress GasLock

Protect Your RV Blog 1We have a great solution to help prevent a worst-case scenario, which includes a thief trying to remove your propane tanks and cutting the lines, costing you upwards of $500 to repair and replace what was taken. The Fortress GasLock is designed to securely lock your propane tanks that are mounted to a trailer, towable or RV. It’s currently the only lock available specifically designed for LP tanks in the industry.

As an added bonus? The Fortress GasLock does not require tools for installation and only takes seconds to install. The propane tank lock does not interfere with LP tanks and can be filled while it’s locked.

Features of the Fortress GasLock Include:

• Avoid typical propane tank theft repairs exceeding $500
• Allows tanks to be quickly locked when mounted to trailers, towables and RVs
• Does not interfere with LP tank valves and can be filled while locked
• No tools, no modifications, installs in seconds
• Affordable investment
• Designed for dual tanks
• High impact powder coated military grade aluminum
• Fits available for all applications
• Only lock available for propane tanks in the industry
• Proudly made in the USA

Kit includes:

• One GasLock assembly
• Lock and keys
• Theft deterrent decal

The Fortress PowerLock

Protect Your RV Blog 2When you purchased your RV, you knew there were certain locks and security items you would need to obtain to keep you and your camper or trailer as safe as possible. Should I leave my RV battery plugged in all winter?

RV Battery Blog 1Winter is near and hopefully you’re prepping your RV so once spring season comes, your trailer still in tip top shape for camping. Have you completed everything on your checklist? Don’t forget that one of the most important steps for winter storage is to keep your batteries in good shape! A common mistake that RV owners make is leaving their battery plugged into the RV converter to maintain its charge while in storage.

Why shouldn’t I keep my batteries plugged in all winter?

RV Battery Blog 2Keeping your batteries plugged in all winter long results in overcharging the battery. RV battery converters charge at a constant voltage that is too high for the battery over such a long period of time. Overcharging results in a fried battery that will no longer function to its full potential. The constant high voltage causes the electrolytes necessary for battery function to boil out, leaving the battery permanently damaged. Battery replacement can cost hundreds of dollars.

Should I leave it unplugged all winter?

That’s also not recommended. If your battery is left sitting and discharges to low enough levels for a long period of time, it will no longer be able to perform or charge up to its full potential. The battery charge capacity is also effected and won’t hold charges for as long as it had originally. Many think a quick fix is just to simply add water and recharge. This unfortunately doesn’t help the battery regain its charging ability. You’re still stuck with a battery that isn’t operating to its full potential.

What can I do to AVOID either overcharging or undercharging my RV batteries?

RV Battery Blog 3Torklift has designed a high-quality locking aluminum solar battery box called the PowerArmor Solar. It features a lockable slide top that can easily be accessed no matter the mounting location.  This box comes in a bright tread diamond plate design featuring a black high impact powder-coated frame for durability. The box bolts directly to RV, trailer tongue, boat, camper bumper, etc. The PowerArmor Solar also has an access port that allows electrical wires to pass through the side wall of the box to easily connect to your electrical circuit system and keep them safe.

More features of the PowerArmor Solar include:

• Prevent common and expensive storage/battery theft (lock included)
• Maintains charge increasing the longevity of the batteries up to 400% to avoid premature battery replacement (solar only)
• Dual use for securing batteries and other gear
• Bolts to your RV, camper bumper, boat, truck, van, etc.
• Heavy gauge diamond plate aluminum for maximum durability
• Designed specifically to access RV batteries avoiding interference with your RV
• Uses a 10 watt solar panel (solar only)
• Comes in bright tread diamond plate featuring black high impact powder coat frame
• Multiple box sizes available holding up to five batteries
• Adjustable dividers for custom size compartment storage (PowerArmor Max only)
• Acid neutralizing battery mat to avoid corrosion
• Legendary Lifetime Warranty
• Proudly made in the USA

How does the PowerArmor Solar keep my batteries charged?

RV Battery Blog 4The PowerArmor Solar locking battery box features a Zamp 10-watt solar panel that extends battery life up to 400% and prevents premature battery replacement. This means that you can keep your battery plugged into the PowerArmor Solar all winter and it will trickle charge your battery – ensuring that it maintains its existing condition all winter. The slow trickle charge reduces the chances of both over and undercharging with exposure to sunlight.

But what if I have more than one battery?

The PowerArmor and PowerArmor Solar are offered in multiple different sizes for all your RVing and boat battery needs. Including the PowerArmor MAX that holds up to five batteries.

• PowerArmor Single*: 17-inch box can hold one group 24-27 battery (perfect for marine applications).
• PowerArmor DH and PowerArmor Solar: 24-inch box can hold up to two group 24-27 batteries. The 26-inch box can hold up to two group 24-27 batteries, and two group 31 batteries.
• PowerArmor MAX: 58-inch box can hold up to two group 24-27 batteries, two group 31, four 31 or 27, or five group 24 batteries.

Torklift’s PowerArmor Solar battery box meets all your needs and protects your batteries over the winter season. For questions or more information on the PowerArmor and PowerArmor Solar, call us at 800.246.8132 or visit our website torklift.com.

*A7720RS PowerArmor Solar Single requires use of 6-amp Regulator to avoid overcharging battery.
*Use of PowerArmor Solar does not replace general recommended inspection and maintenance of batteries.

How do I properly maintain my RV batteries?

RV Battery Blog 1

Are you in need of a solution to avoid undercharging or overcharging your RV batteries? The two most common causes of RV battery failure are these two issues – undercharging and overcharging, which lead to you having to pay to replace your batteries sooner than you should have to. This costs you both time and money that you could have used toward your camping trips.

When batteries go long periods of time with no charge or not fully recharging between cycles, the battery no longer performs at its full potential with the sulfate material hardening into crystals. This results in batteries that lose the ability to hold a charge, which is also known as sulfation. If left on a charger for too long, this results in overcharging the battery which causes severe water loss and plate corrosion, leaving you with a fried battery… and empty wallet.

RV Battery Blog 2

So, what’s the best way to maintain your batteries? At Torklift, we have designed a high-quality locking aluminum battery box called the PowerArmor and PowerArmor Solar. They both feature a lockable slide top that can easily be accessed no matter the mounting location. The PowerArmor Solar is built with a Zamp, 10-watt solar panel that extends battery life up to 400% and prevents premature battery replacement – saving you money and frustration of batteries going bad! The PowerArmor boxes come with a heavy gauge diamond plate that features a black high-impact powder coated frame. Boxes can bolt directly to your RV, boat, trailer tongue, camper bumper and more.

Another great feature of the PowerArmor is the access port that allows electrical wires to pass through the side wall of the box, easily connecting the RV batteries to your electrical circuit system and keeping the batteries locked safely inside – giving you easy access wherever you store it. The solar panel attached to the lid of the PowerArmor Solar allows your batteries to slowly trickle charge with its easy wiring system. This means that you prevent overcharging and undercharging your batteries when the panel is exposed to minimal sunlight – making your batteries last much longer than they normally would in any other storage condition.

Will the PowerArmor hold and charge multiple batteries?

The PowerArmor is available in many different sizes to fit all your RVing and boating needs.

RV Battery Blog 3PowerArmor and PowerArmor Solar

• 17-inch box can hold up to one group 24-27 battery
• 24-inch box can hold up to two group 24-27 batteries
• 26-inch box can hold up to two group 24-27 batteries, and two group 31 batteries

PowerArmor MAX

• 58-inch box can hold up to two group 24-27 batteries, two group 31, four 31 or 27, or five group 24 batteries.

It’s that easy?

Yes! But, don’t just take our word for it. George Brown commented on Torklift International’s Facebook page with a review on how much he enjoys his PowerArmor Solar and how it makes his life easier...

How much propane do I need?

Propane Blog 1

Short answer is, it depends! When speaking with our resident Torklift RV expert Darrel, he said, “the most important thing is to make sure you fill them up before you go!” In an RV or trailer, the furnace is the biggest consumer of propane; with the oven coming in second depending on how much cooking you plan on doing. Another factor to consider is the length of your trip, is it going to be long or a quick trip? You may need to shower which also requires propane for the water heater. Trying to determine how much propane you’re going to use varies with every scenario, so we’ll take you through a few to help give you an idea.

California vs. Alaska

Planning a trip to California or Alaska? Let’s say you’re planning a series of vacations and the first trip is going to be California during the month of August. In this situation, you are going to have warm weather and will probably only need propane if you are going to cook or grill. Essentially, using very little to none. Where is your next trip? How about Alaska in November? For these kinds of conditions, you’ll need more propane because you will likely be using your furnace, needing warm water for showers and propane for cooking as well.

How much does propane cost?

Propane Blog 2Before you can purchase the actual propane gas, you’ll need an LP tank to hold it in, and prices vary between brands. For example, an empty Bernzomatic 20-pound tank starts at $32.97 and another brand is Worthington Pro Grade which is an 11-pound tank that starts at $56.97. After you’ve purchased the tanks, you need to fill the tank with propane. Just like the different brands of tanks, propane prices vary as well. Mostly it will depend on how big your tank is and how much gas you’ll need to fill it up, which can run you anywhere from $15 to $30. Also, if you have two tanks you’ll need to multiply your cost by two. Two tanks is a clever idea for the many situations that can arise while camping and as a backup if you use all the propane from the first tank.

Another cost to consider is the unthinkable – what if your tanks get stolen? While it’s an unfortunate occurrence, it’s not uncommon. You have just returned from your hike and both of your propane tanks are missing, the lines on your RV have been cut and now you have to pay $500 for the repair and replacement costs. With propane tank theft on the rise, what can you do to prevent this?

The Fortress GasLock

Propane Blog 3Torklift has designed a product that can safely secure your propane tanks called the Fortress GasLock. This is an investment that protects your investment.

It requires no tools and only takes seconds to install. The Fortress GasLock works with most common threaded rods (fits available for 3/8” and ½” size applications), and is designed for dual tank usage. Constructed out of military grade aluminum with a high impact powder coat, this is the only lock available that is specifically designed for RV propane tanks in the industry. There is also an Airstream version available if you have one of those iconic trailers.

Further features of the Fortress GasLock include:

• Avoid typical propane tank theft repairs exceeding $500
• Allows tanks to be quickly locked when mounted to trailers, towables and RVs
• Does not interfere with LP tank valves and can be filled while locked
• No tools, no modifications, installs in seconds
• Affordable investment
• Designed for dual tanks
• High impact powder coated military grade aluminum
• Fits available for all applications
• Only lock available for propane tanks in the industry
• Proudly made in the USA

Kit includes:

• One GasLock assembly

What RV battery do I need for my towable RV?

PA Blog 1

With so many types of batteries available, it can be difficult to know which type you need for your towable. Do you need a large battery that will provide more power, or a battery just for small things? Depending how much power you need, there are various battery sizes – the most common is a group 24 battery and a group 27 battery, also known as “house batteries.” The group 24 battery is a good choice if you are limited on space or only have smaller accessories you need to power.

The most important thing to consider when purchasing a battery for your towable is the amount of power you need. Deep cycle batteries come in all different sizes. Some are designated by group size, like group 24, 27 and 31. The larger the battery the more amp hours you get. The same can be said for the types of batteries you get. Although all group 24 batteries are the same size, the brand of the battery will also make a difference. Some recommended battery brands with the best power span for a towable are Trojan, Interstate and Exide. You can read about the best batteries for your RV here.

PA Blog 2

With a larger battery also comes more amp hour reserve capacity. If you have more space available to you, a 6-volt battery, also known as a group 29 and 31 battery, will meet your needs. With battery theft a major concern, including a recent growth of battery theft in Canada, how can you protect your investment?

The PowerArmor Solar
Torklift has designed a high-quality locking aluminum battery box with solar panel that features a uniquely designed sliding lid that can be easily accessed no matter the mounting location. This box comes with an aluminum tread diamond plate featuring a black high-impact powder coated frame for durability. The battery box bolts directly to your RV, trailer tongue, boat, camper bumper and more. With an access port that allows electrical wires to pass through the side wall, you can easily connect the box and batteries to your circuit system. The PowerArmor Solar extends battery life up to 400% and prevents premature battery replacement with the 10-watt solar panel attached to the lid.

How much does the GlowStep Revolution cost?

GSR Blog 1The GlowStep Revolution is the first and only patented step system designed for all RV towables that is versatile and flexible to adapt to any type of terrain. The step entry system is revolutionary for several reasons. Featuring 7 inches of precision elevation adjustment, the GlowStep Revolution has 3 positions of upper adjustment between the RV entry and top step, plus an additional 5 positions of lower adjustment with the All Terrain Landing Gear adjustable feet. As the only step in the world that features this patented and unique level of adjustment at both the top and the bottom of the step system, this step allows all options for accommodating any terrain.

Step series:
Two Step System - Starting at $490.00
Three Step System - Starting at $540.99
Four Step System - Starting at $586.99
Five Step System - Starting at $624.99
Six Step System - Starting at $653.99

GSR Blog 2

The most common application is the 27.5-inch four step series part number A8004. This is because most fifth wheels sit at the same height, the only difference is the length and the layout. The prices of the steps are the same for both the 25.5-inch and the 27.5-inch width models.

To determine the cost of your GlowStep Revolution, first find out how many steps you need. So how do you determine your fit?

Measurements to determine fit of GlowStep Revolution
1) Dimension A: Measure the width between your factory mounting brackets
2) Dimension B: Measure from the top of the step opening to the ground If you have a non-removable bracket to determine how many steps you will need, then there is an extra measurement you have to take to ensure a proper fit:

GSR Blog 3

3) Dimension C: Measure from the top of the step opening to the bottom of the stored step This measurement is to make sure that when the set of steps are compressed that they will fit properly into the storage compartment.

GSR Blog 4

Torklift has designed two parts that will help to achieve a seamless installation of the GlowStep Revolution. Almost 100% of GlowStep Revolution RV steps are a direct bolt-on with no modification required, but just in case you find yourself with a very unique RV, here is some additional details to consider.

GlowStep Revolution Spacer Kit
This kit achieves installation of the GlowStep Revolution step system in applications where the width between factory mounting brackets on your towable is between or larger than the standard factory measurement of 27.5 inches or 25.5 inches (very uncommon). This kit includes four ¼ inch thick steel spacer plates with longer hardware.

GlowStep Revolution Vertical Stud Adapter Bracket
The GlowStep Revolution Vertical Stud Adapter Bracket is made specifically for trailers without vertical brackets that extend out perpendicular from the trailers frame or "predrilled step frame outrigger mounting brackets" to install the GlowStep Revolution. The Vertical Stud Adapter Bracket is attached underneath your step opening allowing the GlowStep Revolution to bolt directly to the bracket.

Top 3 reasons why you need GlowStep Revolution?
Aside from the extensive adjustability the GlowStep Revolution step for towables provides, there are several reasons why these steps will make you one happy camper. Here’s some points to consider:

#1) Avoid getting Dumped with Dirt
Imagine going to stow your steps and having to thrust a heavy unit above your head, only to get flung with dirt and debris that covers your clothes and gets stuck in your hair. With GlowStep Revolution, this scenario will never be a reality. The easy bolt-on installation fits into the factory step compartment, replacing factory steps. Since the steps are installed in the factory compartment, they remain conveniently outside the RV. Drawbridge style steps that fold up and store inside the unit dump dirt, water, sand and other unwanted debris all over you and inside your RV.  If you’re looking to avoid any unnecessary mess, the GlowStep Revolution steps are the right option for you.

fb GSR July

#2) Don’t Get Stuck Between a Rock and a Hard Place
With your trailer or fifth wheel, it’s no doubt you’ll encounter a multitude of obstacles. Whether it’s a tight campground space, a narrow storage area or simply pulling through a gas station. If you want to access the inside of your unit, it’s typical to just open the door and store any last minute groceries, camping gear, etc. For those that opt with drawbridge style steps, you’ll find that it’s not as easy to deploy the steps in tight spaces since clearance will be the deciding factor. Also, you’ll find your access to entry opening will be completely blocked. With GlowStep Revolution you can enjoy the simple pleasures of parking wherever you want and accessing your unit at any time. The multi-link hinge design easily extends to accommodate tight space constraints so it doesn’t matter how close you park to structures, trees, service bays or inside of a storage facility.

GlowStep Revolution Storage

#3) Skip the extra drilling!
In contrast to steps that drill into the vinyl and wood of the RV’s entry threshold, GlowStep Revolution steps are completely bolt-on to the RV’s frame. This avoids vulnerability to possible water damage from drilling holes, and upholds the value and integrity of your RV. Another plus? Available ranging from two to six steps, steps can easily be added and removed so you can take the GlowStep Revolution step entry system with you when you trade in for your next RV.

GSR Blog 5Handcrafted and manufactured from 100% lightweight aircraft grade aluminum and stainless steel, GlowStep Revolution will meet any of your RV step needs. This step system also has safety features built in like the SureGrip step tread and self-illuminating feature that keeps the steps glowing in the dark for up to ten hours with only five minutes of light exposure.

The GlowStep Revolution is proudly made in the USA and comes with our Legendary Lifetime Warranty. For more information click here, email our Tech Support at: support at torklift.com or give us a call us at 800.246.8132.

How much does an RV battery cost?

With a wide variety of RV batteries to choose from, their prices range just as wide. The cheapest RV battery on the market is the Apex Group UI RV battery that costs $48.25, and the most expensive battery being a Lifeline GPL-8DA deep cycle RV battery for $699.88. All RV batteries have the same purpose, but not all are equally created. So, what kind of bang are you getting for your buck? We asked our veteran RV tech Darrel what his opinion is. Darrel has worked in the RV industry for decades and personally installed his share of batteries.

Battery Blog 1Duracell ultra-high capacity battery for deep cycle 6v RV-$109.99

• This is a 6-volt battery with 230 Ah
• 12-month free replacement warranty
• Easy twist and release vent caps for watering

Trojan Reliant-$377.97

Battery Blog 2• This is a 12-volt battery with 150Ah
• This battery is made with robust plates that extends the life cycle and comes with a low calcium grid alloy that reduces gas emissions
• A separator of glass fibers serves to isolate the positive and negative plates while acting as a blotter to absorb the electrolytes

Lifeline GPL-8DA-$639.99

Battery Blog 3• This is a 12-volt battery with 255Ah
• This battery is specifically manufactured for deep cycle applications
• All Lifeline batteries are Coast Guard approved and handmade in the USA, backed with an industry leading five-year warranty

Which one does Darrel recommend?

Darrel recommends the Trojan Reliant. When talking with Darrel he said he recommended this battery because, “the brand produces quality batteries that have been around for years, and they are high capacity batteries that are durable.”

How many batteries do I need for my trip?
Depending on what kind of trip you are taking, you may need anywhere from two to five extra batteries. Extra batteries are always a good thing to have on hand. You are able to expand your power capacity and extend your trip with having extra batteries. Any of us who go off-roading or off-grid boon docking understand the importance of having that extra power to be able to use light bars as well as our stereos. For those of us who travel, whether it’s in a trailer or RV, we all appreciate being able to use the appliances because we have enough power to do so. Having extra batteries brings convenience and many luxuries to the outdoor life.

Where can I store these extra batteries?

Battery Blog 4Torklift has designed a high-quality locking aluminum solar battery box featuring a lockable slide top that can easily be accessed no matter the mounting location. This box comes with a precision laser cut 100% aluminum bright tread diamond plate featuring a black high impact powder coated frame. Boxes can bolt directly to RV, trailer tongue, camper bumper, etc. It features an access port that will allow electrical wires to pass through the side wall of the box to easily connect to your electrical circuit system.

PowerArmor DH Solar/ PowerArmor Max Solar
The PowerArmor solar boxes extends battery life up to 400% and prevents premature battery replacement with the 10-watt solar panel bolted through its lid.

PowerArmor Solar DH starting at $468.99

• 24-inch box can hold up to two group 24-27 batteries
• 26-inch box can hold up to two group 24-27 batteries, and two group 31 batteries

PowerArmor Max Solar starting at $651.99

• can hold up to two group 24-27 batteries, two group 31, four 31 or 27, or five group 24 batteries.

PowerArmor DH/ PowerArmor Max

This battery box design has the same features as the PowerArmor Solar and the PowerArmor Max Solar minus the solar panel. The PowerArmor Max comes with adjustable dividers to customize storage compartment size.

PowerArmor DH starting at $310.99

• 24-inch box can hold up to two group 24-27 batteries
• 26-inch box can hold up to two group 24-27 batteries, and two group 31 batteries

PowerArmor Max starting at $525.99

• Can hold up to two group 24-31 batteries with ample room to store additional hitch or RV towing related equipment by utilizing the storage dividers, or as many as four group 27 or 31, or five group 24 batteries.

Each battery box comes with Torklift International’s Legendary Lifetime Warranty.

Still not convinced? Picture this: You are on a camping trip when you leave your trailer to go on a hike. Your two Trojan Reliant batteries are sitting unsecured in the factory installed brackets on the tongue of your trailer. You then return back to a crime scene. That’s over $750.00 in batteries disappeared not to mention hundreds to repair the cut wiring left by thieves! The PowerArmor box will protect your investment with its key entry system.

The PowerArmor Solar boxes take it a step further. The 10-watt solar panel on top will trickle charge the batteries and extend their life by up to 400%. The trickle charge helps by keeping the battery in optimum condition year-round unlike batteries sitting in storage that may suffer from sulfating (caused by undercharging). The solar panel easily maintains battery life by not under or overcharging them, keeping them in great condition and extending your battery investment. Even without direct sunlight the solar panel on the PowerArmor Solar absorbs reflective light. Each PowerArmor box comes with Torklift International’s Legendary Lifetime Warranty and is proudly made in the USA.

What is the best RV step?

Getting in and getting out of your RV is the first and last thing you do at the beginning and end of every journey you take. With so many step options available how do you decide what way is best for you? From the do-it-yourselfers to Lippert’s Solid Step, MORryde’s StepAbove and Torklift’s GlowStep Revolution, which is going to meet and exceed your needs?

The DIY options
Best RV Step Blog 1If you’re a do-it-yourself kind of person there are a couple options for you. The first project idea I saw was a pallet staircase that was four broken down pallets that were cut and stacked to create stairs. This project was affordable and the materials seemed easy to find. Another project layout I saw, was a staircase cut out of plywood with slats to insert as the steps. These kinds of projects do take time but materials are both affordable and readily available. The downside might be the time it takes to build it, and also finding a place to store it if you are traveling.

Lippert SolidSteps
Best RV Step Blog 2These steps operate through a range of heights with adjustable extensions. The riser height is 8 inches. The design comes parallel to the ground reducing the risk of slipping or falling during use. The step system stows in the doorway inside the RV. This set of steps is a manual steel step with aluminum tread with optional LED tread lighting. The Lippert Solid steps has a 400-pound capacity. It’s a sturdy step, but be sure to double check that the steps are brushed off to prevent any water, snow, or other debris from getting inside.

MORryde StepAbove
Best RV Step Blog 3This is a set of steps that provide stable entry and exit from your RV. A twist handle is used to release the steps and they store right inside the door. The steps seem simple to use. You lift the bottom of the step up and close it above your head- similar to a drawbridge. Many see concerns with the height of the twist handle from the ground. As the twist handle is not at a low point for access, this might be difficult for a shorter person or a child to lower the step. As with the Lippert step, there is a possibility of debris like water, sand, dirt or mud inside the RV since it stores inside the door opening. Parking within narrow spaces is also concerning because this step requires about 5 feet to deploy with its drawbridge design. It features adjustable feet for uneven terrain, however just like the Lippert step, it provides no elevation adjustment for overall step height adjustment that is often needed when leveling an RV. This step has a step riser gap from 8 to 9 inches depending on the model. You can purchase the StepAbove stairs in a three step or four step series with an optional handrail and 500-pound weight capacity for both sets.

Torklift GlowStep Revolution
Best RV Step Blog 4With seven inches of precision elevation adjustment, three positions of upper adjustments between RV and top step, five positions of lower adjustments, plus All Terrain Landing Gear adjustable feet you are guaranteed the safest entry and exit of your RV. These steps are composed of 100 percent rust-free aircraft grade aluminum and are self-illuminating, glowing in the dark for up to 10 hours with no batteries needed and recharge with five minutes of light exposure. It has a specifically engineered hinge assembly unlike any in the industry using a bushing bearing design. Unlike many camper steps available, the GlowStep Revolution has a riser gap of only 7.5 inches where others have a range of 8 – 11 inches. This step system stores and locks under the door way, making it easy to deploy and store. Many accessories are available for the GlowStep Revolution such as the GlowGuide handrail, SafeStep pet barriers, and the DirtDestroyer. Torklift’s GlowStep line of RV steps guarantee longevity, durability, and quality with a lifetime warranty. Check out what Trailer Life Magazine has to say about the GlowStep Revolution here.

So there you have it, the different types of steps that are available for your trailer! In order to enjoy the GlowStep Revolution, give us a call at 800.246.8132 or email us at support@torklift.com to get your set today.

What is happening at the Heartland Owners rally?

On June 13-18, at the County Fair Grounds, in Elkhart the 2017 North American Heartland Owners Rally will take place. This rally is for anyone who owns a Heartland RV, and is a paid member of the Heartland Owners Club. With an expectancy of more than 550 people, we are all looking forward to seeing the latest and greatest from Heartland.

What kind of units can you expect to see at the rally?
With anywhere from 275- 300 units to be present, there will be a wide variety of Heartland RVs and fifth wheels. You can expect large groups of Bighorn, Big Country and Landmarks. As an RV enthusiast like many of you reading this we are all excited to see the latest from Heartland. Big Country's new 3560 SS is going to be something we are hoping to see. Coming in at 13’3” feet tall, 40.7 feet long, and 8 feet wide, it has the ability to sleep four people. This Big Country offers a master suite (queen standard, king optional) and a full bath with many other options available like a fire place or theater seats. Another unit we are hoping to see is 3575 Elite designed by Big Horn. It’s 8 feet wide, 13’3 feet tall and 39’4 feet long and able to sleep four people. This RV has standard hand crafted cabinetry with Amish-crafted natural hardwood cabinet doors with hidden hinges and drawers. With an optional electric fireplace, large four door refrigerator, or a programmable safe, this RV is the top of the line.

Will Torklift be there?
Heartland Blog 1We wouldn’t miss it! Our very own Kyle Bonita will be there giving a demonstration of our GlowStep Revolution. He will be comparing a factory step to the GlowStep Revolution and all of the features it has to offer. We are hoping to see Heartland family member Kelly Barnett, owner of a Landmark Key Largo who loves our GlowStep Revolution. She personally wrote a article to Heartland that was posted on their Heartlands’ blogs and event page, about the replacement of her factory steps and installation of our GlowStep Revolution and what difference it has made to her:

A quote directly from her write-up is, “There is a major difference in the stability of the old steps and the new. Walking up and down the steps there is no ‘give’ because the steps are supported by the legs that rest upon the ground and don’t just hang freely in the air. The GlowStep Revolution makes you feel more safe and secure while going up and down the steps.”

Another Heartland owners club member we are looking forward to see is user Coram8. He posted on the forum with a couple questions and concerns, and was wondering if the GlowStep Revolution would solve these issues. Our steps have a weight capacity of 375 pounds, so there is more than enough support. As far as the clearance between the ground and the first step on your

RV steps Torklift’s GlowStep Revolution is your solution! Our steps connect to the RV and directly to the ground eliminating the unstable and unsafe diving board feeling. We have also designed an accessory called SafeSteps that may benefit you as well! This is a protective panel that creates a vertical barrier closing the gap between the steps to prevent your children or pets from falling between the steps. Check out this GlowStep Revolution thread on the Heartland Owners Club member forum at Heartlandowners.org.

The Ultimate in GlowStep Revolution Fan Mail!

For a while now, we’ve been sharing with you some of our favorite fan mail that we get, which we’ve published here and here. Recently, we had a friend of ours send in the ultimate fan mail letter, and we just had to share with you. Read below to learn all about Steve Thune and his new steps.

Steve Thune Blog 1

“I should begin by first stating that I was not asked to write a review of Torklift’s GlowStep Revolution, but the product is a significant enough change to my RV that it must be done!

My family and I currently own a 2016 Mallard M32 travel trailer. This is our fifth camper and it was a downsizing from our last travel trailer. We didn’t go on any long trips with it last year, but in our history of camping we have managed to pull a travel trailer pretty much from one coast to the other. The Mallard has met all of our expectations, if not exceeding them. The only complaint we consistently had was how high off the ground (even on level ground) the first step into the trailer was at both doors. This consistently presented issues for each family member, including our dog and extended family. We dealt with it by purchasing two of those exercise steps that can be slightly adjusted for height. That worked – sort of.

Steve Thune Blog 2To find out what we could do about it, or what others were doing, I joined in on forum discussions – starting with a forum where other Mallard owners were active. I asked a simple question and was introduced to the GlowStep Revolution. Not convinced, but still impressed with the design, I engaged in continued conversations and went to YouTube to further research.

Our GlowStep Revolution arrived in early Iowa spring. It sat in my garage for almost ten days before I could get my camper home and install them (again, Iowa spring). The installation went very well and while I did attempt to do it myself, my wife was called in to help. I decided to not remove the steps from their framed box and to simply install it all at once. In reflection, if I were to do it again, I would have an assistant from the start, or I would follow the optional directions for a single person install.

Steve Thune Blog 3The steps have been on our camper for the past two or three weeks and we were finally able to get the camper out and use them at a local park. GlowStep Revolution trailer steps are, in a word, amazing.

Since acquiring the Mallard we have found ourselves almost exclusively using the ‘back’ door, the door into the restroom. That door is very convenient, and helps to keep the overall warmth or coolness of the camper from going straight out the door. After using the GlowStep Revolution, we have discovered that we are not using that back door much, if at all. In fact, we want another set of the steps for this door now!

The performance of the steps is spot on. Initially the art of deploying, adjusting, and storing takes some practice. Not to imply it is difficult, it isn’t – there are just steps you need to take and you need to do them in order. Once you have that down, the process becomes second nature. On initial set up we have found them to be slight bit ‘creaky’ with respect to noise. Once you have walked up them once everything settles into place and have never heard any further noise. If you need to adjust them for height, you have options. So far I have started with lowering the top step first and then repositioning the bottom legs second. Each is easy to do, especially with a bit of initial practice.

Steve Thune Blog 4

The solid platform of each step seems to give each family member a more confident footing. The step platform did greatly impact the confidence and ease at which our golden retriever enters and exits the camper! We are even experimenting with the RV carpet for steps on the first two of our four-step system. It doesn’t cover the glow feature and has so far worked well, giving us two steps to kind of wipe our feet before entering. The consistent spacing of the step’s rise and run also makes entering and exiting much less labor intensive for those of us with bad knees and especially for my mother who also has an artificial hip.

Camper rock when entering and exiting has almost been eliminated. This is a huge bonus and directly impacts comfort, especially if you have at least one camping family member that is a night owl – coming in after others are settled into bed.

Steve Thune Blog 5Communication with Torklift has been outstanding. In truth, I have only corresponded with one person. Kerstin has been supportive, helpful, and has responded to all inquiries in a timely manner. If she represents their typical employee, this company understands that out of all the resources it may need – the human one is the most important.

In summary, the GlowStep Revolution in my opinion, should be the industry standard on any camper. They improve step safety, all but eliminate camper rock (also that diving board effect), and can be adjusted quickly to meet each new camping situation. On a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being the highest, I would put them at a 9.5. The deduction of .5 for the slight learning curve (not really avoidable)!"

Thanks for the wonderful review Steve! We are so happy to hear you love your steps. Remember – we’re always here to answer your questions about these upgraded trailer steps by either calling us at 800-246-8132 or by emailing us at support@torklift.com, we’d love to get you set up with a set of your own GlowStep Revolution steps for your trailer! Until the next piece of fan mail friends…
