How to repair a shore power cord

Shore Power Repair Blog 1

Being able to power your RV while traveling is essential. If your shore power cord is damaged or you are a victim of power cord theft, you have options as far as what kind of replacement cord you can purchase. There are two different styles of shore cords and depending on your RV, it may require a small or larger number of amps to power it.

How do I determine what style or how many amps I will need?

Amp ratings

There are two different amp rating shore cords available. What do the amps mean? Here’s an example: If you have a 30-amp rig, you can run one air conditioner and a few other appliances at the same time but not much else. If you have a 50-amp RV plug, then you can plug in and run almost every appliance in your rig at the same time. More amps means more power.

Option one: 30-amp cord that can provide power for a smaller to average sized RV (three prongs)
Option two: 50-amp cord that can provide power for an average to larger sized RV (four prongs)

Different Styles Available

There are two different styles that are available for replacement cords:

Option one- A detachable cord that is plugged into both the RV and outlet which allows you to easily detach and secure the cord. This type of shore cord can easily be replaced and stored in the RV when not in use. If stolen or damaged, it can possibly be expensive to replace, but it’s the only thing that would need to be replaced.

Shore Power Repair Blog 2Example of a 30-amp external cord

Option two- this cord is wired directly to the junction box (and probably already came standard on your RV), which is your RV’s power wiring box. In older RVs the cord is bunched into a small compartment while newer RVs now offer a retractable cord roller for easy storage. If this cord is stolen or damaged, you will have to rewire this shore cord back into the junction box. It could cost you a few hundred dollars to repair the damage and replace the cord.

Each amp rating can be found in both of the cord styles, so it comes down to what is going to meet your needs the best. Now you’ve determined the best shore cord to fit your needs and installed it on your trailer, how are you going to protect it from theft?

The Fortress PowerLock

Shore Power Repair Blog 4Torklift has designed a shore power cord cover called the Fortress PowerLock, to protect the RV power cord from being cut or stolen. This is the only lock available for shore power cords in the industry.  Crafted out of aircraft grade aluminum, the locking shore power hatch is available in a white or black high impact powder coating. Should I leave my RV battery plugged in all winter?

RV Battery Blog 1Winter is near and hopefully you’re prepping your RV so once spring season comes, your trailer still in tip top shape for camping. Have you completed everything on your checklist? Don’t forget that one of the most important steps for winter storage is to keep your batteries in good shape! A common mistake that RV owners make is leaving their battery plugged into the RV converter to maintain its charge while in storage.

Why shouldn’t I keep my batteries plugged in all winter?

RV Battery Blog 2Keeping your batteries plugged in all winter long results in overcharging the battery. RV battery converters charge at a constant voltage that is too high for the battery over such a long period of time. Overcharging results in a fried battery that will no longer function to its full potential. The constant high voltage causes the electrolytes necessary for battery function to boil out, leaving the battery permanently damaged. Battery replacement can cost hundreds of dollars.

Should I leave it unplugged all winter?

That’s also not recommended. If your battery is left sitting and discharges to low enough levels for a long period of time, it will no longer be able to perform or charge up to its full potential. The battery charge capacity is also effected and won’t hold charges for as long as it had originally. Many think a quick fix is just to simply add water and recharge. This unfortunately doesn’t help the battery regain its charging ability. You’re still stuck with a battery that isn’t operating to its full potential.

What can I do to AVOID either overcharging or undercharging my RV batteries?

RV Battery Blog 3Torklift has designed a high-quality locking aluminum solar battery box called the PowerArmor Solar. It features a lockable slide top that can easily be accessed no matter the mounting location.  This box comes in a bright tread diamond plate design featuring a black high impact powder-coated frame for durability. The box bolts directly to RV, trailer tongue, boat, camper bumper, etc. The PowerArmor Solar also has an access port that allows electrical wires to pass through the side wall of the box to easily connect to your electrical circuit system and keep them safe.

More features of the PowerArmor Solar include:

• Prevent common and expensive storage/battery theft (lock included)
• Maintains charge increasing the longevity of the batteries up to 400% to avoid premature battery replacement (solar only)
• Dual use for securing batteries and other gear
• Bolts to your RV, camper bumper, boat, truck, van, etc.
• Heavy gauge diamond plate aluminum for maximum durability
• Designed specifically to access RV batteries avoiding interference with your RV
• Uses a 10 watt solar panel (solar only)
• Comes in bright tread diamond plate featuring black high impact powder coat frame
• Multiple box sizes available holding up to five batteries
• Adjustable dividers for custom size compartment storage (PowerArmor Max only)
• Acid neutralizing battery mat to avoid corrosion
• Legendary Lifetime Warranty
• Proudly made in the USA

How does the PowerArmor Solar keep my batteries charged?

RV Battery Blog 4The PowerArmor Solar locking battery box features a Zamp 10-watt solar panel that extends battery life up to 400% and prevents premature battery replacement. This means that you can keep your battery plugged into the PowerArmor Solar all winter and it will trickle charge your battery – ensuring that it maintains its existing condition all winter. The slow trickle charge reduces the chances of both over and undercharging with exposure to sunlight.

But what if I have more than one battery?

The PowerArmor and PowerArmor Solar are offered in multiple different sizes for all your RVing and boat battery needs. Including the PowerArmor MAX that holds up to five batteries.

• PowerArmor Single*: 17-inch box can hold one group 24-27 battery (perfect for marine applications).
• PowerArmor DH and PowerArmor Solar: 24-inch box can hold up to two group 24-27 batteries. The 26-inch box can hold up to two group 24-27 batteries, and two group 31 batteries.
• PowerArmor MAX: 58-inch box can hold up to two group 24-27 batteries, two group 31, four 31 or 27, or five group 24 batteries.

Torklift’s PowerArmor Solar battery box meets all your needs and protects your batteries over the winter season. For questions or more information on the PowerArmor and PowerArmor Solar, call us at 800.246.8132 or visit our website torklift.com.

*A7720RS PowerArmor Solar Single requires use of 6-amp Regulator to avoid overcharging battery.
*Use of PowerArmor Solar does not replace general recommended inspection and maintenance of batteries.

How do I properly maintain my RV batteries?

RV Battery Blog 1

Are you in need of a solution to avoid undercharging or overcharging your RV batteries? The two most common causes of RV battery failure are these two issues – undercharging and overcharging, which lead to you having to pay to replace your batteries sooner than you should have to. This costs you both time and money that you could have used toward your camping trips.

When batteries go long periods of time with no charge or not fully recharging between cycles, the battery no longer performs at its full potential with the sulfate material hardening into crystals. This results in batteries that lose the ability to hold a charge, which is also known as sulfation. If left on a charger for too long, this results in overcharging the battery which causes severe water loss and plate corrosion, leaving you with a fried battery… and empty wallet.

RV Battery Blog 2

So, what’s the best way to maintain your batteries? At Torklift, we have designed a high-quality locking aluminum battery box called the PowerArmor and PowerArmor Solar. They both feature a lockable slide top that can easily be accessed no matter the mounting location. The PowerArmor Solar is built with a Zamp, 10-watt solar panel that extends battery life up to 400% and prevents premature battery replacement – saving you money and frustration of batteries going bad! The PowerArmor boxes come with a heavy gauge diamond plate that features a black high-impact powder coated frame. Boxes can bolt directly to your RV, boat, trailer tongue, camper bumper and more.

Another great feature of the PowerArmor is the access port that allows electrical wires to pass through the side wall of the box, easily connecting the RV batteries to your electrical circuit system and keeping the batteries locked safely inside – giving you easy access wherever you store it. The solar panel attached to the lid of the PowerArmor Solar allows your batteries to slowly trickle charge with its easy wiring system. This means that you prevent overcharging and undercharging your batteries when the panel is exposed to minimal sunlight – making your batteries last much longer than they normally would in any other storage condition.

Will the PowerArmor hold and charge multiple batteries?

The PowerArmor is available in many different sizes to fit all your RVing and boating needs.

RV Battery Blog 3PowerArmor and PowerArmor Solar

• 17-inch box can hold up to one group 24-27 battery
• 24-inch box can hold up to two group 24-27 batteries
• 26-inch box can hold up to two group 24-27 batteries, and two group 31 batteries

PowerArmor MAX

• 58-inch box can hold up to two group 24-27 batteries, two group 31, four 31 or 27, or five group 24 batteries.

It’s that easy?

Yes! But, don’t just take our word for it. George Brown commented on Torklift International’s Facebook page with a review on how much he enjoys his PowerArmor Solar and how it makes his life easier...

How to install a RV electrical hatch

PowerLock Blog 1

Torklift designed a lockable shore power cord cover called the Fortress PowerLock. It protects the RV power cord from being cut or stolen. This is the only lock available for shore power cords in the industry and protects you from having to pay hundreds of dollars in repairs and replacements.  Crafted out of aircraft grade aluminum, the locking shore power hatch is available in white or black high impact powder coat to match your trailer color. This product is proudly made in the USA and comes with our Legendary Lifetime Warranty.

How do I install the Fortress PowerLock?

PowerLock Blog 2The Fortress PowerLock is easy to install – so easy in fact, it can be done in a matter of 10 minutes and give you peace of mind for a lifetime!

When you receive your kit – the Fortress PowerLock comes with four stainless steel tapping screws and two keys.

  1. Start by removing the existing electrical hatch from the exterior of the camper, and remove the power cord from the back of the electrical hatch.
  2. Clean any remaining sealant from the camper and hatch. To ease your reinstallation, leave the power cord protruding from the camper.
  3. Using your preferred sealant, seal the back side of the Fortress PowerLock.
    1. Be sure to seal all the holes as well as the perimeter of the Fortress PowerLock.
  4. PowerLock Blog 3Next, seal the backside of the flange on your original electrical hatch. Install the original electrical hatch into the Fortress PowerLock, and place the power cord into the back side of the electrical hatch. Slide the cylindrical portion of the electrical hatch with power cord into the opening in the camper.
  5. Reinstall your original hardware through the three holes in the electrical hatch (shown to the right)
    1. Optional: If you feel that the original mounting hardware or condition of the original holes is not up to the task of securing the power cord, the four remaining holes can be screwed into place.
  6. PowerLock Blog 4Pre-drill the remaining four holes in the Fortress PowerLock with a 1/8” drill bit, and install the four #10 x 1¼” stainless steel self-tapping screws (shown to the right). After the screws have been installed, remove any excess sealant away from the edges of the Fortress PowerLock.

Now it’s installed and ready for use! See how easy that was? All you need to do is close the door, insert the key and turn it clockwise and your shore cord is protected! Below is a video demonstrating how the Fortress PowerLock shore power cord door provides the ultimate protection:

How much propane do I need?

Propane Blog 1

Short answer is, it depends! When speaking with our resident Torklift RV expert Darrel, he said, “the most important thing is to make sure you fill them up before you go!” In an RV or trailer, the furnace is the biggest consumer of propane; with the oven coming in second depending on how much cooking you plan on doing. Another factor to consider is the length of your trip, is it going to be long or a quick trip? You may need to shower which also requires propane for the water heater. Trying to determine how much propane you’re going to use varies with every scenario, so we’ll take you through a few to help give you an idea.

California vs. Alaska

Planning a trip to California or Alaska? Let’s say you’re planning a series of vacations and the first trip is going to be California during the month of August. In this situation, you are going to have warm weather and will probably only need propane if you are going to cook or grill. Essentially, using very little to none. Where is your next trip? How about Alaska in November? For these kinds of conditions, you’ll need more propane because you will likely be using your furnace, needing warm water for showers and propane for cooking as well.

How much does propane cost?

Propane Blog 2Before you can purchase the actual propane gas, you’ll need an LP tank to hold it in, and prices vary between brands. For example, an empty Bernzomatic 20-pound tank starts at $32.97 and another brand is Worthington Pro Grade which is an 11-pound tank that starts at $56.97. After you’ve purchased the tanks, you need to fill the tank with propane. Just like the different brands of tanks, propane prices vary as well. Mostly it will depend on how big your tank is and how much gas you’ll need to fill it up, which can run you anywhere from $15 to $30. Also, if you have two tanks you’ll need to multiply your cost by two. Two tanks is a clever idea for the many situations that can arise while camping and as a backup if you use all the propane from the first tank.

Another cost to consider is the unthinkable – what if your tanks get stolen? While it’s an unfortunate occurrence, it’s not uncommon. You have just returned from your hike and both of your propane tanks are missing, the lines on your RV have been cut and now you have to pay $500 for the repair and replacement costs. With propane tank theft on the rise, what can you do to prevent this?

The Fortress GasLock

Propane Blog 3Torklift has designed a product that can safely secure your propane tanks called the Fortress GasLock. This is an investment that protects your investment.

It requires no tools and only takes seconds to install. The GlowStep Revolution trailer steps are designed to be a legacy step system. Giving you the ability to add or remove steps, take the GlowStep Revolution with you when you trade in for your next RV. If you know that the trailer you currently have isn’t the last trailer you will ever own, save your old factory steps and take the GlowStep Revolution with you when you upgrade to your next ultimate 5th wheel, toy hauler or travel trailer.GSR Legacy Blog 2

Similar to the staircase found in your home, the GlowStep Revolution entry step system has the shortest riser height in the industry at only 7.5-inches. Plus, while your trailer may not have a lifetime warranty, your GlowStep Revolution does. It comes with our Legendary Lifetime Warranty ensuring that your steps last for a lifetime.

What do you set your truck camper on when you don’t use it?

With so many options available for truck camper support from DIY options to basic hardware store saw horses to and the Camper Packer which will you choose to put under your truck camper?

For the Do-it-yourselfers

While on the Rv.net forum, we came across a unique DIY design. Rv.net member Budster designed a truck camper support from ¾ inch thick plywood trim which he cut to his desired height with cut outs making X’s with them, and then used 2”x4”s to compensate for any uneven terrain.

Thanks, Budster for sharing this neat idea with rv.net! For anyone out there making their own truck camper supports, we recommend having the lumber you are using treated, so it can withstand the weather. Also, making sure your product will support not only the weight capacity of your truck camper but also the added weight of people and any other gear inside.

Truck Camper Storage 3Truck Camper Storage 1Truck Camper Storage 2

 The hardware store saw horse

Truck Camper Storage 4While exploring hardware store saw horse options we came across no options that would actually work with truck campers. The common option we did find was at Home Depot. Made from pine wood that is 3/8-inch-thick with plywood gussets and fasteners that are corrosion resistant with water resistant glue and is backed by a combination of screws and staples, it’s only able to provide 100 pounds’ worth of support you are going to need more than a few of these or you will run the risk of having it collapse along with your truck camper. That really was the common issue we noticed -- these sawhorses were not rated nearly high as they needed to be to sustain the weight of a truck camper.

This options like the DIY option we recommend getting the lumber treated, keeping in mind they are not adjustable and if you are already running tight on space remember these options are bulky to store and neither come with a warranty.

The Camper Packer

Truck Camper Storage 5The Camper Packer is the industry’s only structural truck camper support base and solution for maintaining a camper’s structure during long term storage. It’s 50 inches side-to-side with special treated lumber to endure harsh weather, it even folds up for compact storage when not in use.

The Camper Packer is the best option for storage as it allows you to lower your truck camper and can bare twelve times the weight capacity of the typical hardware store saw horse at 6,000 pounds per pair. Having a stable support when properly installed will allow you to avoid jack twisting as well as frame damage. Distributing the weight amongst the structure minimizes sway and lifts the weight off the four corners reducing the amount of stress on the frame. With high impact powder coated hardware for added protection, this product is 100% tool-free assembly.

Truck Camper Storage 6

The Camper Packer is USA made and comes with a five-year warranty. So, what is your truck camper sitting on? Post your pictures below in the comments, and for any questions or more info on the Camper Packer contact us at 800.246.8132 or visit our website Torklift.com.

How to avoid 5 pesky problems your truck camper steps are giving you!

SNG Blog 1

Are you tired of having to store your cumbersome truck camper steps inside your camper? Or do they leave a mess inside every time you store them? While there are some pesky problems with truck campers that are unavoidable, these problems are easy to solve with Stow N’ Go steps from Torklift!

Below are the top 5 pesky problems that you have to deal with when it comes to your truck camper steps, and how the Stow N’ Go helps alleviate these issues.

1.) Installation/Removal of Your Current Steps

There are many kinds of truck camper steps available, but most of them are not attached (such as step ladders) and require you to store them inside your camper while in transit. The best way to avoid storing steps inside the RV and eliminate the hassle of detaching steps during transit? The Stow N’ Go is designed for easy “stow-and-go” step operation for truck campers – simply pull the handle to deploy and store truck camper steps. As an added bonus, the bolt-on stabilizing bracket features nylon studs that allows the RV steps to snap securely into place and prevent step movement during transit.

SNG Blog 2

2.) Mess from your truck camper steps

Dirt inside the RV is a no-no! It is incredibly inconvenient having to store your dirty steps inside the truck camper, then it just adds insult to injury when you have to deep clean the interior from everything that was tracked in from the steps. The Stow N’ Go prevents dirty RV interior by installing and storing outside your camper. Mounted directly to the bumper or below the door, these RV steps keep your camper clean so you can focus on more important things – like creating the perfect s’more! Yum!

3.) Instability

To stabilize steps on uneven terrain, the Stow N’ Go comes standard with the All Terrain Landing Gear adjustable feet. The All Terrain Landing Gear reach the ground and ensure solid placement on any type of terrain. Avoid dealing with the shaky, wobbly feeling of factory steps or having to carry around an extra ladder that isn’t attached to your camper. Ladders and booster steps can be dangerous. Injuries can happen when stepping from one step to another with unstable steps. Don’t fall in-between! With the stability of the Stow N’ Go there’s no fear of falling.

SNG Blog 3

4.) No visibility at night

One of the best things about camping is getting to see all the stars at night and not having to see the glow from city lights. There’s nothing quite like it – but this also comes with a potential risk: not being able to see your steps at night once you’re done stargazing! Instead of having to stumble and guess where your steps are, there should be an easier way to get in and out of your camper at night. That’s where the Stow N’ Go comes in - these camper steps glow-in-the-dark for up to ten hours with only five minutes of light exposure – no batteries necessary. This is due to the glow-in-the-dark stickers that are attached to the top of the steps, making the Stow N’ Go even more versatile and perfect for both day and night use.

5.) Lost or stolen truck camper steps

There isn’t a worse feeling than returning to the camper and finding that someone stole your equipment. Or the sudden pit in your stomach when you realize that you’re 6 hours into a trip back home and you forgot or lost your truck camper steps. Both of these events means that you’ll have to get a replacement step. This not only takes time out of your trip, but also costs more money than you planned for. The Stow N’ Go steps easily prevent this – they are lockable with GlowStep Locks to prevent theft or potentially leaving them behind at the last campground.

But, don’t just take our word for how great these steps are! Below is Frank Poole’s thoughts on his old steps and how he feels about upgrading to the Stow N’ Go on his truck camper:

SNG Blog 4“I have been using a Giant Ladder before and while it did the job very well, it was sort of a hassle, lifting into and out of the camper, not to mention climbing up on the Fox step to get to the bumper open the door while keeping a death grip on the ladder. It just fit on the floor and was cumbersome…”
-Frank Poole

What is this solution you ask? None other than the latest and greatest from Torklift, the Stow N’ Go! The Stow N’ Go truck camper steps are easy to install and come standard with a mounting bracket that can be installed below your truck camper door or on the bumper of your truck camper. The “Pros” of the Stow N’ Go according to Frank?

Pros:
-Easy to use, in/out.
-Very convenient, especially for quick stop use, markets, access, etc.
-Easy Storage, just lift and push/pull. No dirt inside of camper.
-Sturdy, like normal step only stronger.
-Adjustable levelers on the bottom, very important for boondocking.
-Able to ADD or Remove steps depending up need - don't have to buy a whole new set of steps.
-Ribbed step to help prevent slipping in wet weather.
-Glow tabs to see steps.
-Lifetime Warranty.

We love everything you had to say about the truck camper steps Frank and thank you for the encouraging words! We agree that the ability to easily lift and store the steps on the outside of the camper to prevent a dirty interior, as well as the sturdy and strong feeling that comes from the hand-built steps with All Terrain Landing Gear are great features.

Further features of the Stow N’ Go include:

What RV battery do I need for my towable RV?

PA Blog 1

With so many types of batteries available, it can be difficult to know which type you need for your towable. Do you need a large battery that will provide more power, or a battery just for small things? Depending how much power you need, there are various battery sizes – the most common is a group 24 battery and a group 27 battery, also known as “house batteries.” The group 24 battery is a good choice if you are limited on space or only have smaller accessories you need to power.

The most important thing to consider when purchasing a battery for your towable is the amount of power you need. Deep cycle batteries come in all different sizes. Some are designated by group size, like group 24, 27 and 31. The larger the battery the more amp hours you get. The same can be said for the types of batteries you get. Although all group 24 batteries are the same size, the brand of the battery will also make a difference. Some recommended battery brands with the best power span for a towable are Trojan, Interstate and Exide. You can read about the best batteries for your RV here.

PA Blog 2

With a larger battery also comes more amp hour reserve capacity. If you have more space available to you, a 6-volt battery, also known as a group 29 and 31 battery, will meet your needs. With battery theft a major concern, including a recent growth of battery theft in Canada, how can you protect your investment?

The PowerArmor Solar
Torklift has designed a high-quality locking aluminum battery box with solar panel that features a uniquely designed sliding lid that can be easily accessed no matter the mounting location. This box comes with an aluminum tread diamond plate featuring a black high-impact powder coated frame for durability. The battery box bolts directly to your RV, trailer tongue, boat, camper bumper and more. With an access port that allows electrical wires to pass through the side wall, you can easily connect the box and batteries to your circuit system. The PowerArmor Solar extends battery life up to 400% and prevents premature battery replacement with the 10-watt solar panel attached to the lid.

Each battery box has a ventilated design to prevent batteries from overheating, as well as an acid neutralizing mat to avoid corrosion. All Torklift International PowerArmor battery boxes come with locks, a Legendary Lifetime Warranty and are made in the USA.

With a locking battery box, you can prevent common battery theft and also use them to safely store other gear once you choose which battery is the perfect fit for what you need. Using a proper storage method, like the PowerArmor, you can keep your batteries in optimum condition year round, saving cost on premature battery replacement. Torklift Stow N’ Go

TC Step Blog 3The Stow N’ Go step was manufactured after feedback from customers, especially those who wanted an upgrade that made it so they could avoid the tediousness of removing and storing their steps on the inside of their campers. What accessories are available for my Airstream?

Airstream Blog 1Airstream trailers are one of the most desired in the industry. They’re a blast from the past that is here to stay, and making quite a comeback in recent years. There’s a good reason why too – Airstreams have a certain quality about them that people just intrinsically love. There are all kinds of amazing modifications you can do to this “silver bullet.” You can do little upgrades such as adding lights, a propane tank lock, a new fridge or stove, or go big and design a new Airstream layout. A great way to find mods to Airstream trailers is looking at the Air Forums, particularly on this renovation that forum user Katheryn did. She brought her Airstream trailer back to life! She had her work cut out for her too.

Katheryn added new upholstery and color. Below is how it turned out:

Exterior upgrades
Airstream Blog 6When it comes to exterior upgrades such as replacing the skin (aka the outside) of Airstreams, adding your own individualized touch with cute Pottery Barn furniture or customized lighting – the possibilities are endless. Air Forums user Bilbo added a DIY storage compartment to the exterior of his Airstream.

He converted a queen bed into two twins and wanted to take advantage of the new under bed space. He took measurements and went to work with a metal cutter. On his thread, user Bilbo stated the longest part of the project was building up the confidence to drill into his “baby.” Props to you Bilbo, it turned out great! With so many possibilities you might be wondering: what other options are available for my Airstream?

Torklift or HappiJac Tie Downs?

When getting ready to journey out with your truck camper, a thought that probably crosses your mind, “is my truck camper safe?” The way your truck camper is secured with tie downs and turnbuckles is essential for safety and stability while hauling. What brand of tie downs and turnbuckles are out there?

HappiJac Tie Downs - Starting at $284.80
HappiJac has designed a tie downs system by creating an I-beam truss structure that uses leverage to reduce the force on your truck, and control the truck camper movement. The front two anchor plates are drilled for installation at the front of the truck bed where the cab and bed meet.

 Turnbuckle Blog 1

The two rear anchor points are drilled onto the back bumper. The HappiJac tie down anchor points paired with their turnbuckles create a triangle leverage counter force to prevent side-to-side, front-to-back and up and down movement. By preventing this movement, it prevents the camper and truck from moving as a solid unit which can cause jolting to the truck bed and camper. This tie down system is covered by a one year warranty from purchase date.

Turnbuckle Blog 2Torklift Steel Frame-Mounted tie downs - Starting at $313.99
Torklift’s patented designed tie downs incorporate four tie down points that bolt directly to the truck’s frame. A system that bolts directly to the truck frame dramatically improves stability and handling. The tie downs are engineered to secure your truck camper to your truck with a tight fit and no loss of ground clearance.

The Frame-mounted tie down systems are designed to eliminate bed and bumper damage. When the steel frame-mounted tie downs are paired with any of our fully spring-loaded turnbuckles, we warranty the truck frame and camper anchor points for the extent of the manufacturers warranty. Because the turnbuckles are springloaded, it allows the truck and camper to move together as a solid unit which prevents jolting to the truck. Since the tie downs mount to the frame, there is no risk of tearing sheet metal on the bed or pulling down on the bumper. We have also designed a high-performance aluminum and stainless steel tie down called the Talon Camper Tie Downs that is constructed of 100% military grade aluminum and stainless steel that is rust free and corrosion protected for life.

Turnbuckle Blog 3A tie down finishing kit and locks are available for both tie downs. Our tie downs are also the only tie downs in the industry that come with a Legendary Lifetime Warranty.

Different Options Available for Electrical Cord Hatches

Fortress PL Blog 1While you’re sitting there enjoying your drink of choice (coffee or tea in the morning, a glass of wine at night?) scrolling through the latest RV news and blogs, we bet learning about electrical cord hatches caught your eye!

Many people don’t usually think about their RV electrical cord hatches or shore power cords, but did you know that not only are there a few different options to protect your RV cords, but that theft of the cords is a major issue in the RV industry?

Annually in the United States, the amount of copper that is stolen and redeemed is more than $1 billion – and from 2009-2011 the number of claims of copper wire numbered around 5,000. You can visit here for more interesting statistics about copper theft – but the big takeaway is to save yourself the headache and protect your wires from being cut and stolen out of your RV.

Typically, there are three types of electric cord hatches for RVs:

There’s your normal cable hatch, shown below. Although the most common hatch installed on RVs, there’s not much to this one – it does offer minor protection when it comes to protecting the cord from the elements, but there’s no lock. A thief could just easily break the door off and rip out the cord.

Fortress PL Blog 2

Then, there’s the sturdier and lockable electric hatch door, shown below. This one is a bit better when it comes to security – at least there’s a lock! But, while there is a lock, it is made of plastic and if a thief has any tools like cord cutters, they could probably break through the plastic door and get to the cord very easily. Think we can do a bit better than this? We agree!

Fortress PL Blog 3

Now, here’s the MacDaddy of shore power cord protection! Shown below is the Fortress PowerLock. Not only is it made of aircraft grade aluminum and comes with a lock to protect your cord, it also comes in two stylish colors – high impact powder coated black or white to match your RV. With a quick installation, your shore power cord and electrical hatch are protected for life.
